Malawi govt got it wrong from word go on Covid-19

My confession is that I am and will still be in support of a national lockdown to stop the spread of Covid-19. I believe its the way to go.

However, the whole process has been a mess. For starters, there was no need for a cabinet special committee on Covid-19. This is a health issue, not necessarily a political challenge.

Thinking of scoring a political point with the issue will only making matters worse.

In all fairness, the Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC) has saved government with the injunction. There would have been great chaos.

We saw on Friday, April 17, 2020, people all over Malawi speaking with one voice.

Even those from the Lhomwe belt came out to stop the lockdown. That’s what hunger does to people. It sees no colours.

Go back to the drawing table. Invite all political leaders, the clergy, chiefs, corporate as well as small scale business owners.

Let everyone be involved in decision making relating to Covid-19. It is here for all, same way hunger will trouble everyone regardless of political belonging.

Government made an executive error imposing the lockdown on hungry people.

HRDC saved us all this day. Nawonso a Trapence phuma akanangozisiya boma liwone lokha anthu atalusa. Kukanavutatu. Did you see Limbe vendors inu?
