Malawi’s political parties sign ‘violence-free’ deal with Police

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)–Political parties in the country have signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Malawi Police Service (MPS), in which the parties have agreed are demanded to stick to nonviolence campaign ahead of the fresh presidential election.

The development formally declares the parties collective pledge to keep away from indulging in acts of violence in the course of the on – going campaign period, during and after the forthcoming fresh presidential election.

The signing ceremony, held at the Police Headquarters on Friday, May 15, in Lilongwe, comes in the wake of reported wave of political violence in some parts of the country where some got severely injured.

Speaking when he briefed journalists, Acting Inspector General of MPS Duncan Mwapasa said the Police realises that the promotion of peace and order is a collective responsibility.

In her remarks, Secretary General for the ruling DPP Grezeldar Jeffrey joined other stakeholders in urging party members not to yield to emotions for the promotion of peace and inter and intra – party democracy.

Her remarks were echoed by representatives from other parties including UTM Secretary General Patricia Kaliati, who was flanked by the party’s Director of Youth Bon Kalindo.

Also present was UDF Secretary General Kandi Padambo and Ibrahim Matola of the former ruling People’s Party – PP.
