MZUZU-(MaraviPost)-The country’s Director of Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB), Reyneck Matemba on Sunday, July 12, 2020 admitted that the operations of the bureau in the fight against corruption were being hampered by the previous Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) led government.
Speaking on Sunday in a Tiuzeni Zoona radio edition on Zodiak Broadcasting Station (ZBS), Matemba said the previous government was deliberately frustrating the operations of the bureau by not providing it with adequate financial resources.
Matemba, who said he is now enjoying his work because of not being influenced by political big fish, further disclosed that at one point he used his personal money to investigate corrupt practices by those who were politically connected. He cited the matter of Dr Thom Mpinganjira, the former Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of FDH Financial Holdings, who was arrested by the graft busting body for allegedly attempting to bribe the five judges who were presiding over the 2019 presidential case, as an example.
The soft spoken Matemba, also revealed that his work at ACB faced numerous stumbling blocks because he used to receive gnawing advice from the previous political leadership.
The ACB boss also warned the members of the current government to perform their duties earnestly, saying should they indulge in any corrupt practices in the course of their work, the long arm of the law will, one day, catch up with them and they will be brought to book. He also appealed to Malawians to be vigilante so that politicians do not abuse public resources.
A coup of weeks ago, ACB released a public notice warning all public servants who were intending to change the ownership of their property; in the face of regime change, to seek vetting of the bureau before doing so.
