LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-The 21 year- old man identified as Clement Chigwe was on Tuesday, December 8, 2020 killed for allegedly attempting to rape a child at Msundwe in the capital Lilongwe
Central Region Police spokesperson Alfred Chinthere confirmed the death of Chigwe.
Chinthere told The Maravi Post that the victim’s father allegedly killed Chigwe upon learning that he attempted to rape his daughter.
The deceased happened to be his servant.
According to Chinthere, there were attempts by the communities to beat up the victim’s father in retaliation for his action.
The police publicist says police are still investigating the matter.
The deceased hailed from Mango village, T/A Njewain Lilongwe.
The development comes barely a week after Homeland Security Minister Richard Chimwendo Banda made public that any suspected rapist must be beaten severely before the police.
Consequently, The Centre for Human Rights and Rehabilitation (CHRR) and the Youth and Society (YAS) demanded resignation of Minister of Homeland Security Richard Chimwendo Banda for instigating mob justice against alleged perpetrators of defilement.
In press statement made available to The Maravi Post on Tuesday, December 1, 2020 signed by CHRR Executive Director and YAS Executive Director, Michael Kaiyatsa and Charles Kajoloweka respectively, the two groupings understand Banda’s frustration over increased cases of defilement in the country and the urgent need to deal with the problem, but encouraging mob justice is not and cannot be part of the solution.
