BLANTYRE (MaraviPost)–At least three people were confirmed dead after the trailer of the lorry they travelling went off and swerved to the ditch at Kwancha Roundabout in Blantyre Thursday.
The three died on spot while several others, who sustained serious injuries, were rushed to Elizabeth Central Hospital.
Deputy Spokesperson for Southern Region Police Beatrice Mikuwa feared the number might rise as some people were seriously injured.
Trailer went off and swerved to the ditch after driver of the lorry (registration number NE 2305), identified as Rashid Anthony Malick, failed to negotiate a corner at Kwacha Roundabout following brake failure.
But some eyewitnesses claimed that truck was also un-roadworthy and heavily loaded.
The truck, which was heading to East Bank in the Lower Shire district of Chikwawa, had various items ranging from groceries to kitchen wares.
Meanwhile, the driver of the truck belonging to Malick Investments is in police custody.
