Lazarus Chakwera: I will honour martyrs

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)—Tonse Alliance torchbearer Lazarus Chakwera has asked people of Nkhata Bay to embrace Malawi Congress Party (MCP) arguing it is only Kamuzu Banda administration that assisted the families whose relatives were killed in 1959 in the district during the colonial rule.

Chakwera was speaking at Maganga Ground in Nkhata Bay where he held a political rally together with former president Joyce Banda, former vice-president Khumbo Kachali and other leaders in the alliance.

He said Malawians who fought the colonial government sacrificed their lives for the sake of a better nation.

Chakwera said Malawi Congress Party is not a party for only those in the central region.

He, therefore, reminded the people that gathered at the rally that the first president of the party, Orton Chirwa, came from Nkhata Bay district.

“Some people think [Malawi Congress Party] is a party for people in the Central Region only. But let me tell you that the first president of the party Orton Chirwa came from Nkhata Bay District. Even people who were killed by the colonial government, their sons and daughters later joined MCP. That is the reason I will respect and honour the martyrs,” Chakwera said.

Taking her turn, Banda charged that the government should account for the billions of kwacha which donors provided to assist in fighting Covid-19.

“We know that there is Covid-19 in many countries but I think God loves us because there is no clear case that the government is telling us about. Therefore, the money that came to support the lockdown and other interventions on the virus should be chanelled towards other initiatives,” Banda said.

Kachali and MCP second vice-president, Harry Mkandawire, asked the people of Nkhata Bay to vote for Chakwera, saying he has their welfare at heart.
