President Lazarus Chakwera has paid a heartfelt tribute to the late Vice President Saulos Chilima, announcing that the Lilongwe Six Lane Road will be renamed “Chilima Highway” in his honor. Speaking at a memorial event, Chakwera described June 10, 2024, as a devastating, heartbreaking, and unforgettable day for the nation.
The President emphasized the importance of coming together to mourn and pay respects to the departed, urging Malawians to support one another during times of grief.

He commended those who refrained from politicizing the tragedy, instead choosing to show respect and solidarity.
“We need to come before God and pray for one another, because time will surely come for us to die as well,” Chakwera said, adding that,”We also need to respect all those who departed, each one of them requires respect, no one requires ridicule.”
Chakwera revealed that he had invited members of the bereaved families to the memorial event and had directed the Secretary to the President and Cabinet to look into their challenges.
He acknowledged Chilima’s senior role among the departed, stating that he deserved special recognition.
The renaming of the Lilongwe Six Lane Road to “Chilima Highway” is a fitting tribute to the late Vice President’s legacy. The gesture demonstrates Chakwera’s commitment to honoring Chilima’s memory and contributions to the nation.
