NKHATABAY-(MANA)-President Lazarus Chakwera has reiterated that his government will continue implementing various infrastructure projects in Nkhata Bay as one way of honoring the district describing it as the origin of the Malawi Congress Party (MCP).
President Chakwera said this at Nkhata Bay Boma in the area of Senior Chief Mkumbira where hundreds of people gathered as the Malawi leader is continuing whistle-stop tours in the district.
According to Chakwera, several people lost lives in Nkhata Bay fighting for the country’s freedom, hence the need to be honoured.
He added that government will soon embark on rehabilitating Nkhata Bay jetty, just as it is doing with the one at Likoma to improve marine transport.
“In addition to several development projects we are implementing in the district such as irrigation farming, fisheries, and other sectors, let me announce that the airport that will soon be constructed in Mzuzu will be named Orton Chirwa International Airport, as a way of honoring the people of Nkhata Bay,” he said.
Minister of Trade, Vitumbiko Mumba, who is Chakwera’s running mate in the September 16 general elections, assured the public that the MCP led government will fulfil all its promises.
In his remarks, Senior Chief Mkumbira thanked the President for various development initiatives, such as provision of clean water and irrigation farming projects at Linga and Mzenga, among others.
Ian Changa Kaunda, who is contesting for the parliamentary seat for Nkhata Bay Central Constituency under the MCP banner, said people are ready to vote for all MCP candidates because of the visible development projects already happening in the district.
