LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-The country’s Civil Society Elections Integrity Forum (CSEIF) has expressed worrisome with reports that preliminary voters’ register record is missing in some centres across the country.
The development comes as Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) is conducting verification processes of voters transfers ahead of September 16, 2025 General elections.
In a press statement issued on Monday, March 17, signed by CSEIF Chairperson Benedicto Kondowe observes that the matter raises serious questions about the integrity, transparency, and credibility of the voter registration process which is a cornerstone of free, fair, and credible elections.
“While we acknowledge MEC’s commitment to addressing these anomalies, the magnitude of this
issue demands immediate, transparent, and accountable corrective measures.
“The credibility of the electoral process hinges on the accuracy and completeness of the voters’ register, and any lapses risk undermining public trust and the right of every eligible citizen to participate in the upcoming
elections,” reads the statement in part.
CSEIF, therefore, urges MEC to conduct a prompt comprehensive and independent audit to determine the root cause of the missing records and provide a full public disclosure of its findings.
Kondowe demands also an immediate guarantee remedial action to ensure no eligible voter is disenfranchised.
He said the commission must put in place a clear, time-bound plan to rectify all irregularities.
“MEC must engage stakeholders meaningfully by holding an urgent consultative meeting with political parties, civil society, and election observers to foster transparency and confidence in the process.
“The commission must strengthen quality control mechanisms to prevent recurrence of such irregularities, reinforcing public confidence in the electoral system”, reads CSEIF statement.
Kondowe adds, “As civil society, we stand firm in our commitment to safeguarding electoral integrity and call upon all stakeholders, including voters, to remain vigilant and engaged in monitoring the entire process.
“The legitimacy of our democratic institutions depends on an electoral process that is beyond
reproach”.
