BLANTYRE (Maravipost)–Malawi’s First Lady Gertrude Mutharika will officially launch her Beautify Malawi Trust (BEAM) this Saturday.

The launching ceremony will take place at Kamuzu Grand Marquee in Lilongwe where they will be also a fundraising dinner for the Trust.

Mutharika, who is Patron and Chairperson of the BEAM, says the Trust is also open to any corporate or individual support in cash or in kind to kick-start BEAM’s dream of making Malawi a cleaner and healthier nation.

The dream, according to the First Lady, will be realised through projects in sanitation, waste management and waste recycling.

Mutharika also said waste collection levels in Malawi are low and have triggered
widespread illegal open dumping and backyard incineration.

As such, the Gertrude Mutharika Beautify Malawi Trust (BEAM) is aimed at encouraging Malawians to work towards making the country cleaner and healthier.

“The Gertrude Mutharika Beautify Malawi Trust (BEAM), is envisioning increased access to participatory and improved sanitation and sustainable community management of waste and waste facilities in Malawi,” she said.

According to her, illegal open dumping sites have created negative environmental impacts and increased the health risk of the residents.

She said she is committed to restoring Malawi’s lost beauty by, among other things, encouraging good refuse management and
waste recycling.
