KARONGA: Floods are affecting crops and houses alike in Karonga, This following the heavy inexorable rainfall that has smacked the district since Sunday.

On Tuesday, preliminary report filed by the District Disaster Risk Management Team revealed that 72 houses were submerged in water including 4 others of Kaporo police unit while 8 collapse due to persisted rainfall that resulted into floods.

However, the District Disaster Risk Management and Crops Officer under DISCOVER Project in the Self Help Africa organization Blessings Mlowoka told Maravipost that the figure is expected to shoot on Wednesday due to the heavy rainfall that hit the district on Tuesday night.

“The persisted rainfall that is hitting the district will cause destructions to a number of houses as well as crops in the field apart from the 72 affected on yesterday. This is due to the strong rainfall that struck most areas apart from Traditional Authority Kilipula in the district,” warned Mlowoka.

“What is needed now is that all people surround the flood prone area should go to the evacuation centers in order to avoid further destructions of properties including lives,” added Mlowoka

He said among the affected villages include Mangulu, Elias, Chimalawanthu and Phaniso in just mentioning a few.

Mlowoko also worried that “the rainfall will also results to the hunger situation in the district because the little harvest that would have save the community for some months will be affected.”

While confirming that the victims are hiding at African Church in Kaporo area, Karonga District Commissioner (DC) Rosemary Moyo asked organizations and any other well wishers to assist her office with different relief items such as sanitation facilities, mosquito nets among others.”

This is not the first time for the district to be affected by floods as another 900 households were also dispersed from their houses in February the same year.
