The minister highlighted the bill’s comprehensive legal framework designed to tackle the industry’s slow growth and stakeholder relationship challenges.

“The bill establishes the Malawi Sugarcane Industry Commission, a regulatory body that will oversee registration and licensing requirements for sugarcane growers, transporters, millers, and associations, ensuring compliance with industry standards,” said Kawale.

He explained that the bill also introduces a dispute resolution mechanism through the establishment of a sugarcane industry tribunal.

“This tribunal will resolve disputes between stakeholders, promoting a more harmonious and productive industry,” added Kawale.

The minister emphasized that the bill is expected to enhance the sugarcane industry’s performance and contribute significantly to Malawi’s economic growth.

The development comes after sugarcane farmers had been demanding the passage of the Sugar Industry Bill to address several challenges faced by growers.
