Ian Khama

GABORONE-(MaraviPost)-Ian Khama suffers embarrassing loss as nemesis wins Botswana elections.

According to him (Khama), he voted for the opposition because he is disappointed his hand-picked successor, Masisi has become like some African leaders who are drunk on power.

Like Mugabe, who after the November 2017 coup, denounced his party- Zanu Pf, his successor Mnangagwa and allegedly voted for the opposition- MDC (which lost the 2018 elections). The former Botswana President Ian Khama pulled a Mugabe failed stunt and voted for a losing opposition party- Botswana Patriotic Front.

The Botswana election was held on Wednesday and results announced yesterday the 25th of October 2019 with BDP- Masisi as the winner. The dramatic renouncing of Masisi shook up and electrified the country’s traditionally calm politics.

A rift between the president and his predecessor started last year when Khama resigned near the end of his constitutional limit of two five-year terms.

Once in power Masisi quickly started reversing several of Khama’s key policies, including lifting his ban on elephant trophy hunting, infuriating his predecessor.

Khama threw his weight behind the Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC), once his fiercest critic.

Then in May, he formed his own party, the Botswana Patriotic Front (BPF), which fielded candidates in only 19 of the 57 constituencies.

The elections were expected to be most competitive in Botswana’s post-colonial history where three possible outcomes where anticipated: a BDP outright win; a hung parliament; or a UDC outright win.

Masisi’s administration is infamous for the contentious decisions to lift a ban on hunting elephants and to oversee the decriminalization of homosexuality, a move that saw the conservative Botswana populace praise Masisi and would so much return him to power.
