BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost )-Motorcycle taxi drivers in the capital Lilongwe have threatened to protest on Wednesday against what they claim is extortion by youths allegedly sent by Malawi Congress Party (MCP) officials.

According to a statement released by the Kabaza Motorcycle Taxi Association of Malawi(KMTAM), the youths are demanding K1000 or K2000 from the drivers at designated parking spots (Lanki).

Reads the statement in part:”We demand justice. This is a country for everyone, and we voted, and we will vote again on September 16, 2025.These youths are extorting money from people who are transporting sick patients on motorcycles.”

It further states that they attempted to contact authorities (unnamed) regarding the issue but received no assistance.

When contacted for further clarification on the matter, a senior member of the Malawi Coalition for Kabaza Stakeholders and Associations (MACOKASA), Moses Mwalabu, confirmed the incident and stated that they know the officials who are sending the youths to collect the money.

“We are protesting because we are tired of this behavior. These youths are using the power of the ruling party, but we maintain that this country belongs to everyone,” said Mwalabu.

Meanwhile, the Lilongwe City Council(LCC) spokesperson, Lawford Palani, has confirmed receiving the complaint.
