LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-Malawi court on Thursday, January 27, 2022 denied bail politician Bon Kalindo illegal electricity meter charge.
This means Kalindo will be remanded to Maula Prison for four days after Senior Resident Magistrate Florence Msekandiana reserved her ruling on a bail application to 31st January 2022.
Kalindo has been charged with one count; tampering with an electricity meter and has pleaded not guilty to the charge.
In the bail application, the State told the court that Kalindo should be remanded to Maula for 7 days as they are not yet done with investigations.
The State also said this is to prevent Kalindo from committing further offenses as he is already on bail over two cases he is answering in other courts.
They further argued that Kalindo’s offense is a serious one saying if found guilty one is fined k5 million kwacha and 10 years imprisonment.
But Gilbert Khonyongwa Kalindo’s lawyer has argued that the police were supposed to conclude the investigations before effecting the arrest.
He further argued that Kalindo is a Malawian who resides in the house with his family and that he is a human rights activist.
He said, remanding Kalindo for seven day for an accusation that he tampered with an electricity meter would not be in the interest of justice.
Khonyongwa, said the state has not indicated in their arguments that the accused is a flight risk and therefore there should be no reason to deny him his freedom to bail.
More to come…
