JB and Mutharika on verbal war

MZUZU-(MaraviPost)-Civil society organisations in the country have condemned the verbal war between Malawi’s immediate past Head of State, Dr Joyce Banda, and the incumbent President Peter Mutharika, describing the feud as retrogressive and petty.

The organisations; Youth and Society (YAS) and Centre for Humans Rights and Rehabilitation (CHRR) feel such a tendency of throwing vulgar remarks between the leaders smacks of lack of seriousness and sensitiveness on their part.

According to YAS’s Executive Director, Charles Kajoloweka, President Mutharika has the obligation to stand above politics and display mature leadership.

“We expect the President really to tower above petty politics because he cannot use violence of whatever form of derogatory remarks as a stepping stone into power.

“Malawians are looking for issues; how is he going to address youth unemployment in this country? How is going to deal with growing corruption in this country? Malawians are looking for answers to the difficult questions that this country is going through,” asked Kajoloweka.

While echoing similar sentiments, Executive Director for CHRR, Michael Kaiyatsa, says both leaders have to apologise to Malawians.

“What she said referring to the President as a drunkard was not good. Such remarks are not necessary they are also retrogressive. But at the same time, we condemn the President for reiterating in an excessive manner; because calling a married woman things like a prostitute is not something that is in our culture, it is not something that is civil.
So we are saying both leaders were wrong and both should also apologise to Malawians,” Kaiyatsa said.

Former President, Dr Joyce Banda, called Mutharika a drunkard at a political rally at the weekend. As a payback, while on a whistle stop tour in Thyolo on Monday, Mutharika, described Madame Banda as a prostitute.
