Malawi electoral body revokes new voters registration following Supreme Court ruling

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has called off the registration of new voters following the ruling of the Supreme Court of Appeal on 8 May, 2020.

According to the Statement issued on May 9 2020 by Chief Elections Officer, Sam Alfandika the commission has disclosed that it will only handle those that wishes to process transfers or replace lost voter certificates up to 4.00pm on May 10, 2020 in the districts of Rumphi, Likoma, Dowa, Lilongwe District, Lilongwe City, Lunchenza Municipality, Phalombe, Mulanje and
Thyolo.

The Commission has said all new voter registrations that took place in phase one and the current phase 2 have been nullified and will not be incorporated in the 2019 Tripartite Elections voters register as stated in Supreme Court of Appeal judgement.

The Commission has also asked all persons who registered in the May 2019 Tripartite Elections and have changed places of residence to go and process transfers at the centre where they wish to cast their vote.

Those who have lost their certificates have been entreated to go to the centre where they registered and get a duplicate certificate that will enable them to vote in the forth coming July 2nd fresh presidential elections.
