Malawi Local Government Minister announces strong measures taken to combat COVID-19

STATEMENT ON #COVID19 BY THE MINISTER OF LOCAL GOVERNMENT AND RURAL DEVELOPMENT HONOURABLE DR. BEN PHIRI, MP.

LILONGWE (MaraviPost): Local Authorities have already been negatively affected by the COVID-19 pandemic and measures have to be put in place in order to make sure that the Local Authorities also play a role in combating the spread of the disease. These measures are aimed at preventing the further spread of the virus and containing it since there are now reported cases.

Services to be suspended during this period are as follows:

 Entertainment, Public Events and Works:

  • All bottle stores, pubs, bars and clubs are closed, including in all hospitality facilities.
  • All cultural events and activities are suspended.
  • All sporting activities are suspended.
  • Weddings, engagement ceremonies, bridal showers, send offs and all gatherings of public and social nature are suspended.
  • Funerals shall comply with social distance restrictions and be attended by a maximum number of 50 people. Observation of COVID-19 sanitary and health measures is a requirement at all funerals.
  • Fast food outlets, restaurants and public eating places will be closed to the public except for take away services. All residents in hospitality facilities shall be served in their rooms.
  • All construction works are suspended.

  Markets

  • Local Authorities shall designate make-shift markets and also regulate the conduct of business in public markets.
  • All mobile markets are suspended.

Religious Gatherings:

All religious gathering is suspended.
Local Authorities will be allowed to provide essential services as follows:
(a) Health and sanitation services as guided by the Ministry of Health.
(b) Pharmacies and drug stores.|
(c) Firefighting and emergency services.
(d) All utility services; and
(e) Veterinary services.

The Ministry has also considered that there are other activities which have to take place or continue, while observing strict social distance restrictions and COVID-19 hygiene and sanitary measures:

(a) Harvesting of crops and grazing of livestock shall be allowed; and

(b) Operation of maize mills.

There is need for more public sensitization and awareness through radios, TVs and other mobile public address mechanisms.

Let us stay at home as much as possible and stay safe.
