
LILONGWE-(Maravi Post)- Kamuzu International Airport (KIA) Police in the capital Lilongwe, on Sunday arrested a 35-year old businesswoman for attempting to externalize foreign currency worth $ 40,500 (MK31 million).
KIA police spokesperson Sapulain Chitonde, identified the suspect as Dalitso Chimbuli m, who holds a Malawian passport. She was arrested at the departures lounge in the afternoon. before boarding an Ethiopian Airways, destined for Dar-es slam, Tanzania.
Chitonde told The Maravi Post that the suspect hid the forex on her undergarments; however, the physical search conducted by female Police Officers, discovered the hidden cash.
The police publicist said while searching was in process, they observed a strange bulge on her body parts, which felt strangely hard, and the officer demanded her to take it out.
Chitonde added that Chimbuli at first refused to take the hard object out. He said because she disobeyed the orders by the Police Officers manning the checkpoint, the officers on duty became suspicious, and referred the matter to the CID Officers.
“The suspect was taken into a cubical, where she was physically searched by female Police Officers. Consequently, the physical search led to the discovery of the said forex concealed in her underwear.
“After being asked to produce supporting documents, Chimbuli failed. Thereafter, she was arrested. She is currently bail and expected to appear before court to answer charges of Illegal possession of foreign currency and attempting to externalize forex,” Chitonde said.
The suspect Chimbuli comes from Kafanikhale Village, Traditional Authority (T.A) Msakambewa in Dowa district, however, she currently stays in Biwi Township in Lilongwe, where she conducts her business.
