Malawi’s Joyce Banda says rural electrification programme to enhance socio-economic activities

BLANTYRE (MaraPost)–Electrification of rural trading centres will help spur socio-economic development in the country, President Joyce Banda has said.

President Banda spoke when she commissioned the Malawi Rural Electrification Programme (MAREP) at Chadza Trading Centre in Traditional Authority Malili’s area in Lilongwe on Thursday.

 

She said electrification of trading centres was one of the projects her administration was implementing in transforming the lives of the people particularly those in rural areas.

Banda said her government is committed to transforming the lives of the ordinary people through initiatives as MAREP, Mudzi Transformation Trust, A Cow per Family Programme, Social Cash Transfer and the distribution of food to hunger stricken households.     

The President said government would also ensure maximum crop production by implementing both the subsidized farm input programme and through the credit facility.   

President Banda, who assumed the country’s Presidency following the sudden death of Bingu wa Mutharika, said her government had made Malawii competitive once more within two years she has been in power as evidenced by the availability of basic necessities such as forex and fuel.   

The President also spoke on the positive impact on people’s livelihood as Tobacco was fetching good prices under her administration.   

She said there was now genuine freedom of the press and association in the country due to her Government’s decision to respect democratic values that were never respected in the past.  

The President then assured Malawians that it was only her administration that would ensure people live in peace and harmony which is prerequisite for investment, economic activity and sustainable development.-MARAPOST.
