KARONGA-(MaraviPost)-In a bid to fill the vacant parliamentary seat in Karonga Central Constituency Malawi Congress Party (MCP) is today Friday August 7, 2020, set to unveil Eliam Simwaka as MCP aspirant.
MCP Karonga District Chairman, Emmanuel Nkhoma has confirmed the development to Maravi Post on Thursday.
The development unfolds barely a week after Lenard Mwalwanda [nephew to late Dr. Cornelius Mwalwanda] was first to be unveiled as MCP aspirant.
This clears disturbing rumours that MCP had initially resolved to handpick kingpin to late Dr. Mwalwanda as a candidate on the ballot paper in the forthcoming by-elections.
According to Nkhoma, MCP is set to hold primary elections in order to fish out favourable candidate of the two.
In another inlet, United Transformation Movement [UTM] constituency structures are very disappointed with party seniors’ resolve of pushing in Frank Tumpale Mwenifumbo to replace Florence Shackie Nthakomwa.
It is reported that Nthakomwa has a huge hand in building and selling UTM in Karonga central constituency.
However, it is largely envisaged and speculated that the party is not appreciating her efforts.
Nthakomwa came third in the 2019 parliamentary elections closing the gap between the then two hot contenders, late Dr. Mwalwanda and Mwenifumbo.
UTM grassroots in KCC have decried the move to welcome Mwenifumbo without following proper procedures.
“Despite the fact that we are in democratic era, there should be no room for smiling at political hoppers such as Mwenifumbo,” they add.
They also contemplate that UTM is sidelining Nthakomwa based on her weak financial capital.
In a separate interaction with Nthakomwa, she has accepted to shoulder out Mwenifumbo on primaries. However, she bemoaned the conduct by Mwenifumbo sympasizers who are phoning, asking her to step aside so that she gives chance to Mwenifumbo to easily reclaim the seat.
Such calls are being justified by the fear that both Mwenifumbo and Nthakomwa hail from Mwenilondo village, hence splitting homebase votes as it was the case in 2019 parliamentary elections– the political slot that enormously frustrated and slimmed Mwenifumbo’s good omen of victory.
