MACHINGA-(MaraviPost)-Lack of adequate secondary schools in Machinga district is contributing to the drop out of learners after completing a primary school level since a large number of learners that pass the Primary School Leaving Certificate Exams is not selected to secondary school.
For instance, in 2020, the learners that passed exams were 6906 and from this, only 2204 were selected to secondary school.
Worse still most of secondary schools available in the district are Community day secondary that do have scanty resources.
People in the district have been requesting the government as well as companies that have corporate social responsibilities to consider constructing a good number of conventional as well as national secondary schools to allow learners have access to quality education in the district.
The residents were therefore very excited to see that the government took an initiative to construct Machinga Secondary School.
However, the excitement was short-lived by the fact that the school was opened and learners are selected to the school but the project is not being completed up to now.
The vice President Dr Saulosi Chima visited the school last year in April and ordered the contractor, Nangaunoze to finish the Project but up to now no one seems to take responsibility.
The Chairperson of Friends of Machinga Trust, Sinoya Winesi has lamented that the failure to complete the project and the consequential opening of the school has caused a great injustice to the people in the district.
Winesi observes that that every project has charter that shows the scope, the time limit and the budget and a contract is established with the contractor.
He added that where there is a breach by one party the other party is entitled to enforce it or terminate the contract but in this case both the government and the contractor are comfortable which is surprising and worrisome.
Winesi therefore said it would be better if the office of the Ombudsman would intervene to investigate in the project for the people to get the right information from the findings.
The PTA of the school have just resorted of mobilizing resources to gradually finish work on the remaining areas of the project.
There was no immediate reaction from ministry of education on matter.
