Malawi’s Ngoni Chiefs lament cultural death among the youths

MZUZU-(MaraviPost)-Chiefs in Mzimba District have expressed worry over the death of their culture in the country, especially among the youths.

Speaking at his headquarters, one of the chiefs in the district, Traditional Authority Mpherembe said it is very worrisome that most youths are in the country no longer pride on their culture, instead they are busy flocking abroad.

The Senior Chief further said it is a serious cause for concern to notice that many young people cannot competently express themselves in Ngoni language.

“External influence is on the rise, so to say. But we need to address the external influence because it has brought in drastic changes that are not palatable to our culture,” Senior Chief Mpherembe said.

Mpherembe then advised other Chiefs under his jurisdiction and leaders of Ingoma dance to put in place a mechanism by which they can pass on cultural pride to the young children in schools and the youths in general.

In his comment, President for Young Achievers for Development, Jivason Milanzi, said it is very important for the youths in the country to be custodians of their cultural pride.

Among other things, Ngoni people in the country are known for Ingoma dances, and heavy consumption of beef and beer.
