LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-The governing Malawi Congress Party (MCP) has strongly condemned opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP)’s violence provocation ahead of next year’s General elections arguing that Malawi is a peaceful nation.
MCP Secretary General Richard Chimwendo Banda told the news conference in the capital Lilongwe that political violence has no place in Malawi democracy.
Banda was reacting to DPP Eastern Region Governor Daudi Chikwanje remarks which he incited DPP members to burn down MCP supporters in the region.
MCP Secretary General hinted the need for promotion of unity and peace ahead of next year’s general elections.
Chimwendo therefore appealed to party members not to retaliate DPP’s violence provocation saying its leader Chakwera embrace peace and tranquility.
On Mbowe’s DPP blue parade fracas, Chimwendo challenged the party, “I can challenge DPP Youth Director Norman Chisale to come up with the list of suspected names those involved in the fracas.
“Norman Chisale told me directly that Mbowe was nothing to do with MCP”.
Chimwendo Banda appeals, “Show your anger by registering in large numbers to vote against violent DPP that it shouldn’t come back into power in 2025.
“The nation must embrace democracy that was attained in 1994. This leadership will not accept violence tendencies”.
MCP Secretary General warns, “Malawi Congress Party therefore is warning party members to desist from violence saying that the party will fire violence members”.
Meanwhile, Malawi Police Service (MPS) has summoned DPP regional governor for the eastern region Chikwanje at Liwonde police.
Chikwanje reportedly made remarks at a political rally in Machinga on Sunday, September 29, that could potentially igniting violence.
A video clip on the same has gone viral in the social media.
Malawi police spokesman, Peter Kalaya, says police will issue a statement on the matter.
DPP vice president for eastern region, Bright Msaka, says Chikwanje is at the police station.
