LILONGWE (MaraviPost): The Democratic Progressive Party Vice-President for the Eastern Region, Honourable Bright Msaka SC, on new year’s eve presided over the finals of a football tournament in Machinga Central East, winding up a thrilling competition that pitted 42 teams from the constituency against each other.
The tournament funded to the tune of five and a half million Kwacha (K5.5 million) is the brainchild of Machinga Central East Member of Parliament, Honourable Daud Chikwanje.
After battling it out for 8 months, a total of 34 teams crushed out of the competition midway, with eight cruising through to the top but only two, Mbanira Medicals and Kauma FC reached the finals of the constituency showpiece.
And after a grand display of skills before a crowd of jubilant supporters, it was Mbanira Medicals that got a rare opportunity of receiving their hard-earned trophy from the guest of honour at the event, Honourable Bright Msaka SC.
The victors also carted home K250, 000 prize money, a new football kit, boots and four soccer balls. On the other hand, Kauma FC did not go home empty-handed as they received K200, 000, a new football kit and boots.
In his remarks after presenting the prizes to the winners, Honourable Msaka first commended Honourable Chikwanje for the huge investment made in the development of youth in his area.
Msaka, who is also Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs, said this is in line with the vision of His Excellency, Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika and the DPP government, which has placed youth at the top of its development agenda.
He cited the construction of technical colleges across many of the country’s districts and the establishment of the K10 billion MEDEF loans as testimonies of this commitment.
The minister then called upon other DPP Members of Parliament in the Eastern Region to emulate the example by Honourable Chikwanje to harness the huge potential of the youth in building the party and the country.
Turning to the participating teams, Honourable Msaka congratulated them for their efforts, which he said will help groom football talent in Machinga Central East.
“Very soon we will see players from the constituency in the Super League teams and the Malawi National Team,” said Msaka.
He then urged the youth to work hard in education and also to take advantage of the many training opportunities provided in the Technical Colleges introduced by the president.
In terms of prizes, the third and fourth teams in the competition received K150, 000 and K100, 000 respectively, while the rest of the teams that reached the top eight went away with various monetary gifts.
