Mizu Foundation, a locally based developmental organization in collaboration with the country’s premier telecommunication service provider, Telecom Network Malawi (TNM) has launched the first ever Cape Maclear triathlon aimed to raise funds for charitable activities.
The triathlon main event which is slated for September 18-20, 2015 in the lakeshore district of Mangochi will attract local and foreign tourists by taking part in various sporting act ivies including 0.7 km swim, cycle and run and 10 km run, canoe race, vessels and football tournament while raising funds meant for charity.
The proceeds from the fun run event will go to Kasungu National Park Anti-poaching, child legacy international, Billy’s Malawi Project, Chembe Water Project, Tilinanu Lilongwe African Orphanage and H.E.L.P Malawi among others.
In an exclusive interview with The Maravi Post after the launch on Tuesday, August 11, 2015 in the Capital Lilongwe, Jam Kaunda, Creative Director of Mizu Foundation said this year’s triathlon event set to sell Malawi’s beauty and inspiring people to take up athletics whether as a career or just a sport or for healthy living reasons while on other hand raising funds for the poor.
“Mizu foundation’s long term goal is to be part of the movement to end the need for charity all together. Donor fatigue is on the rise around the world and we can’t always rely on others to help us all the time; and new ways have to be created in our society that increases awareness hence holding this year’s TNM Cape Maclear Triathlon.
“Triathlon is an event for everybody such that we have incorporated all sorts of activities including group or individual Triathlon, beach volleyball and football tournaments, long boats or dugout canoe race, fun run and main party at golden sand as the event promises to leave a footmark in Malawi sports and tourism sector. Thus, we are requesting the public to apply for attendance through the website (www.capemacleartriothlon.com) with a few easy steps for registration”, appeals Kaunda
Speaking on the event, Danny Malisita, TNM Head of Region whose company has pumped MK8 million in making sure that the event should run smoothly thought of supporting the occasion to boost tourism through sport which he said has already made a great significant to the country’s social-economic growth.
The Maravi Post caught up with James Ndalama, The Director in the Ministry of Youth, Sport and Development who advised the organizers of the event to properly channel the proceeds to its intended purposes in a bid to win sponsors confidence while assuring the organizers of the ministry technical support a head of the episode.
Echoing on the same, Patricia Liabuba, Director in the Ministry of Information, Tourism and Culture said the event was slated at the right time, the month the country dedicated to promote tourism which according to her this year’s occasion will attract more tourists who are to boost forex earning for the country’s economic growth.
Apart from Mizu Foundation and TNM, other sponsors including Carlsberg, DHL, Tembo-Energy drink, Creative Lab, The living room café, Design printers Limited, Mike Appel and Gatto Ltd, Annie’s Lodge and Malawian Style among others.
