BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)—In what can be described as a message to Malawians that covid-19 fight requires unity across the political spectrum, Malawi President Peter Mutharika has roped in Members of Parliament from the opposition political parties in a field trip aimed at monitoring isolation centres across the country.
Ministers in special committee on covid-19 have today started a two-day field trip and have been accompanied by opposition legislators, many of which are from Malawi Congress Party (MCP).
The MCP legislators include Apatsa Kadaluka, Ashems Shongwe, Liana Kakhobwe Chapota, Hallima Daudi, Simplex Chithyola, Harold Patrick Phillipo Chinkhondo, and four independent MPs in the name of Savel Kafwafwa , Susan Dossi, Eurita Ntiza Valeta and Ramuzani Juma Mahomed.
The officials are expected to visit 17 districts.
Meanwhile, different quarters have applauded President Mutharika for the inclusion of the opposition members, saying that is the only way Malawi can ably fight the covid-19 pandemic.
Mutharika has been urging opposition political parties and Civil Society Organisations to temporarily suspend advancement of personal interests and join the government in the fight against the novel coronavirus.
Malawi has so far recorded 36 cases of coronavirus. From the 36 covid-19 confirmed cases, 23 (including 2 deaths) are from Lilongwe, 9 (including 1 death) from Blantyre, and Chikwawa, Nkhotakota, Karonga and Zomba have one case each.
