It is heartening to learn of the release of Captain Moussa Dadis Camara, who received a presidential pardon on health grounds. The former Head of State was serving a 20-years prison term when announcement of his release was made on 29th March, 2025. This humanitarian gesture coincided with the occasion of end of this year’s Holy month of Ramadan.
The New African Charter International (NACI) is delighted and relieved to hear this great news and wish to commend the Government of Guinea, under the wise and role-model leadership of General Mamady Dumbuya for committing itself to genuine national reconciliation. NACI salutes the efforts of those who made this possible.
Credible information at our disposal reveal that Dadis Camara has now joined his family members and continues to undergo a full physical and psychological examination with his private doctors. The former Head of State is also revealed to be in high spirits, even though he appears to be suffering of health-related fatigue.
The Holy Month of Ramadan brought us this wonderful blessing. NACI shares the joy of the family and friends of Dadis who have received this good news also with a sigh of relief.
Dadis Camara was appointed Head of State of Guinea, following the death of President Lansana Conte in 2008. In January 2010 Moussa Dadis survived an assassination attempt after being shot on the head by one of his bodyguards, Aboubacar ‘Toumba’ Diakité. He was flown to the Kingdom of Morocco where he received treatment, before his exiled to Burkina Faso, where he lived for 12 years. Dadis voluntarily returned from exile to face allegations of human rights abuses in Guinea. Dadis has always insisted of his innocence in all allegations made against him by his adversaries.
Concluding, we call on all Guineans to bury their ethnic differences and welcome the presidential pardon extended to former Head of State, Dadis Camara as an expression of President Dumbuya’s compassion and humanity. It should also be seen as an important step towards accelerating the ongoing development and transformation process in the West African nation. It shows the significant progress that has been made in solving the problem of reconciliation in guinea, in line with President Mamady’s pledge.
In solidarity!
