Nankhumwa, Chaponda gang against President Mutharika’s choice for Chimunthu Banda as running-mate-Road to May 21 polls

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-Information reaching this publication shows that President Peter Mutharika has settled for former Malawi Speakers Henry Chimunthu Banda as his running after failed to feature Atulere Muluzi nof United Democratic Front (UDF).

President Mutharika decision has however not gone well with Democratic Progress Party (DPP) inner circle including Local Government Minister Kondwani Nankhumwa, former Agriculture minister George Chaponda and others who are eyeing the same position.

According to sources Mutharika settled to Chimunthu Banda over his political prowess and that he comes from central region which can give DPP additional votes than having the presidential candidates from the same region.

But Nankhumwa who posed himself  as the good boy to the President vehemently blocked Chimunthu Banda for the post of the running mate.

By Thursday afternoon, Mutharika was not yet made a final decision to the position of the running mate as the two and other inner DPP inner circles are not comfortable with the president’s decision.

“Chimunthu Banda is somehow reluctant to be the running mate he is saying that there is no assurance for him to be the torch bearer in the next elections. The former speaker fears that what Chilima has experienced in DPP might also hit him because Nankhumwa and  Chaponda are also interested to take over the mantle

And Chaponda also insulated him during the time of Bingu that he is a Tumbuka who wants to take over the party. This made the president arrive late in Blantyre (Sanjika) from Lilongwe because of the crucial meeting”, says the source.

Efforts to get both Nankhumwa and Chaponda reactions on matter proved futile as their mobile phone could not be reached.

There has been power struggle in DPP the party that always think of the Lhomwe belt when it comes to leadership despite how best one member from other regions are.

Mutharika will be the last presidential candidate to president nomination papers to Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) on Friday at COMESA Hall in Blantyre at 2pm.

  1. Story yopeka iyi. There is no way Chaponda and Nankhumwa can partner APM. You cannot have the pair from neighbouring districts as if there are no other Malawians in other districts.
