Writing on Facebook Maneno Chimulala an educator and Freelance reporter said APM is already a popular brand. So all what he wanted was a person of good character, high sense of integrity to partner him. He was not looking for a popular politician because we know pretty well that some are popular in politics because of cashgate money. #Everton Chimulirenji is the best choice.
Indeed this was a brilliant choice. Peter Mutharika and the DPP are more popular than any party in the country. He did not need to burden himself with Characters with baggage and scandals that were going to distract from the campaign.
In introducing his running mate Peter Mutharika wrote the following on twitter “I have chosen Honourable Everton Chimulirenji to be my Running mate towards the 2019 Elections. I have chosen a member of my Cabinet, a man of integrity, maturity, and a long serving dedicated member of the Party”.
According to those in the know. The runners up to the Vice Presidency were, Local Government Minister Kondwani Nankhumwa, former agriculture minister Chaponda and former speaker Henry Chimunthu Banda and Education Minister Bright Msaka.
While the above list had accomplished politician and civil servants. They all had baggage that was going to weigh on the campaign. Opposition is now trying to see what they can use against Everton Chimulirenji.
Only time will tell however for now once the dust settles down and disbelief dissipates many will see this was ingenious move by APM.

It is clear the party is divided and people are afraid to come in the open because of the baggage they are carrying.
It might be a good choice now but in the long term it is bad for the party. Chimulilenji, if DPP is voted again into power he will taste power in the next five years. His next stop after 5 years will be the presidency. You should expect alot of change in the party structure in the next five years if Peter wins the elections.

You can AGREE that Peter Mutharika is not stuppid. We can also AGREE that President Mutharika know Msaka better than you and me. They have worked togather beginning with Bingu till now. He also knows Nankhumwa ans Chimuthui Banda very well. It is also disrespcting Mutharika when you say he is under his wifes thumb. I think when you anger dissipates you will understand why this selection was made
