PETRA’s Kamuzu Chibambo names absent running mate: Road to 16 September

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-As required by the electoral laws of Malawi, every presidential candidate must name a running mate when submitting their nomination papers to the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC).

In line with this requirement, Kamuzu Chibambo, leader of the People’s Transformation Party (PETRA), has named Chris Bulakwacha as his running mate for the upcoming 2025 General Elections.

However, controversy has emerged as Chris Bulakwacha was notably absent during the official presentation of the nomination papers.

The absence of the running mate has raised concerns about the validity and completeness of the candidacy documentation.

Observers have pointed out that the presence and signed consent of a running mate are crucial elements for a valid nomination under the guidelines set by MEC.

It remains unclear whether Bulakwacha’s absence was due to logistical challenges, personal reasons, or internal party issues.

The Malawi Electoral Commission has yet to formally address the implications of the running mate’s absence on the acceptance or rejection of PETRA’s presidential nomination.

This development adds to growing scrutiny around compliance with nomination procedures as the country enters the official campaign period ahead of the 2025 elections.

As political parties prepare for the heated race, the issue underscores the importance of organizational preparedness and adherence to electoral laws.
