LILONGWE (MaraviPost)—Embattled Presidential Press Secretary, Gerald Viola has sued Malawi News of the Times Group claiming that they defamed him, Maravi Post has learnt. The court action has come following a news item the paper carried alleging that Viola in an interview with them said that his boss, President Peter Mutharika may consider to buy a presidential jet once the economy picks up.
Viola, through his Lawyer Ambokile Salim, is asking for compensation amounting to MK 250 million from Times Group for publishing false information. The author of the story Gregory Gondwe has been sued as the first respondent, the editor of the paper as the second respondent and Times Group as the third respondent.
“Yes it is true that I have instructed my lawyers to commerce legal proceedings against times Group for the damages that I have suffered following their story in which they quoted me that President Peter Mutharika might consider buying the jet, I view that as total misrepresentation of facts,” said Viola in an interview.
Viola who mercilessly attacked Zodiak radio during a press conference recently came under heavy fire from the Malawi media when an implication was made by newsroom editors that his saying that Malawi president Peter Mutharika is not responsible for the appointments he makes explaining that his top aides are the ones responsible was tantamount to President Mutharika being a puppet leader vindicating what anti-corruption and good governance crusader Z Allan Ntata has been saying that we have a puppet leader in Mutharika.
