The legacy of the late President Bingu wa Mutharika stands as a pillar of Malawi’s political and economic transformation. His leadership was defined by a commitment to self-reliance, infrastructural growth, and economic independence. As the founder of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), Bingu sought to establish a political movement distinct from the autocratic tendencies of the past, particularly those associated with the Malawi Congress Party (MCP). However, it is deeply concerning to see his name being used as a political tool for personal gain, with Madam Callista Mutharika among those distorting his legacy.

Bingu wa Mutharika was a leader who governed with a clear and well-defined vision. He prioritized economic growth, championed food security through the Farm Input Subsidy Programme (FISP), and pursued major infrastructural projects that reshaped Malawi. His policies emphasized reducing dependence on foreign aid, empowering local industries, and ensuring sustainable national development. His governance style was results-driven, focusing on tangible progress rather than empty political rhetoric.
In recent years, however, there has been an unfortunate trend where certain individuals invoke Bingu’s name not to honor his achievements, but to gain political mileage. Madam Callista Mutharika has repeatedly referenced Bingu in ways that appear more self-serving than sincere. Her political maneuvers suggest that she is leveraging his reputation to enhance her own position rather than genuinely continuing his vision. If Bingu were alive today, he would have outrightly rejected such exploitation of his name. He was a leader who built his legacy through action, not through sentimental appeals or opportunistic associations.

One of the most glaring contradictions in Madam Callista’s approach is her political alignment with forces that Bingu himself opposed. The DPP was created as an alternative to the policies and governance style of MCP, yet some of her recent political engagements suggest a disregard for the ideological foundation that Bingu worked hard to establish. This raises serious concerns about whether her use of Bingu’s name is motivated by genuine respect or by political convenience.
The exploitation of deceased leaders for political gain is not only unethical but also an insult to their legacy. If someone truly believes in Bingu’s vision, their actions should reflect his principles. That means championing economic independence, standing against political oppression, and advocating for self-sustaining development rather than using his name as a prop for political narratives. Leadership should be about one’s own vision, ideas, and ability to inspire change—not about invoking the past to gain support.
Malawians deserve leaders who stand on their own merit, not those who depend on the legacies of others to stay politically relevant. If Madam Callista or anyone else wishes to engage in politics, they should do so based on their own policies and values rather than clinging to Bingu’s name. Political credibility is earned through action and service to the people, not through sentimental manipulation.
Furthermore, history has shown that the electorate is not easily deceived by political opportunism. Malawians can differentiate between those who genuinely seek to serve the nation and those who are merely using historical figures to advance their own ambitions. The people of Malawi should reject any attempt to distort Bingu’s legacy for short-term political gains.
Bingu wa Mutharika’s contributions to Malawi should be honored with dignity and integrity. His name should be remembered as a symbol of progress, economic empowerment, and transformative leadership. The best way to preserve his legacy is to continue the policies he championed, rather than exploiting his memory for political maneuvering. Those who respect him should focus on building upon his achievements rather than distorting them for their own benefit.
It is time to move beyond using past leaders as political crutches. Malawi needs forward-thinking leadership that prioritizes national development over political nostalgia. By focusing on the present challenges and offering real solutions, politicians can demonstrate their value to the nation without resorting to the exploitation of historical figures. Bingu’s legacy should inspire progress, not be reduced to a mere talking point for political expediency.
Callista Chimombo’s political exploitation of Bingu’s name condemned: A disgrace to his legacy

By Twink Jones Gadama
In a shocking display of political opportunism, Callista Chimombo has come under fire for her blatant desecration of the late President Bingu wa Mutharika’s name in her campaign for the Malawi Congress Party (MCP). The former president, who founded the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) with a vision that starkly contrasts with the MCP’s ideology, would undoubtedly have disapproved of such exploitation of his legacy for personal political gain.
Chimombo’s decision to emblazon her vehicle with the phrases “MCP Boma” and “Mai Bingu” is not only a misguided attempt to align herself with the revered former leader but also a direct affront to the principles he stood for. Bingu wa Mutharika was a man of integrity who dedicated his life to the service of the Malawian people, and it is unfathomable that his name would be used to promote a party that represents an entirely different set of values.
Political analysts and citizens alike have expressed outrage at Chimombo’s actions, arguing that they undermine the very essence of Bingu’s legacy. “If Bingu were alive today, he would not have allowed his name to be politically exploited in this manner,” said a prominent political commentator. “We must protect his legacy from those who seek to tarnish it for their own ambitions.”
The late president’s ghost is likely to haunt Chimombo as she continues to ride on the coattails of a name that should be honored, not manipulated. The DPP, founded by Bingu, was built on principles of development, economic growth, and national pride—values that stand in stark contrast to the MCP’s historical narrative.
As Malawians reflect on Bingu wa Mutharika’s contributions to the nation, it is imperative that we stand united against any attempts to distort his legacy for political gain. Callista Chimombo’s actions are a reminder of the need for vigilance in protecting the names and legacies of our leaders, ensuring that they are remembered for their true contributions rather than being used as mere political tools.
In this critical moment, we call upon all Malawians to reject Chimombo’s attempts to exploit Bingu’s name and to honor the late president’s memory by upholding the values he championed. Let us ensure that his legacy remains untarnished and that we continue to strive for the vision he had for a prosperous Malawi.
