President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera has called on Malawians to support the Malawi Red Cross Society (MRCS) in its efforts to raise K200 million for humanitarian activities. Speaking during the launch of the MRCS 2025 Flag Week at Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe, Chakwera emphasized the importance of uniting to help and support the society, particularly in responding to natural disasters that can affect anyone regardless of their status.
“Natural disasters can affect anyone without considering their status, hence we must unite to help and support MRCS as it plays a crucial role in responding to disasters,” Chakwera said. He led by example, donating K2 million to MRCS towards the cause.
The President’s call for support highlights the critical role that MRCS plays in providing humanitarian assistance to those in need. As the Patron of the MRCS, Chakwera’s endorsement of the society’s work underscores the importance of its mission.
Minister of Health, Khumbize Kandodo Chiponda, echoed the President’s sentiments, calling for more support for MRCS. “MRCS is a reliable partner to the nation during national disasters, including cyclones, floods, and others,” Chiponda said. “We must continue to support the society in its efforts to provide humanitarian assistance to those in need.”
MRCS President, Innocent Majiya, explained that the money collected during the Flag Week will be used in various emergency operations in the country. “The funds raised will enable us to respond to emergencies and provide critical support to those affected by disasters,” Majiya said.
This year’s Flag Week is being held under the theme “On the Side of Humanity.” The theme highlights the society’s commitment to promoting humanity and providing assistance to those in need.
The MRCS Flag Week is an annual fundraising campaign that aims to support the society’s humanitarian work. The funds raised during the week are used to support various programs and activities, including disaster response, health and safety education, and community development initiatives.
