Road to 2025: Malawi’ mass voters registration commences

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-The voter registration process for the upcoming elections on September 16, 2025, has officially commenced across 14 districts in all regions, including the urban center of Karonga.

This initiative is crucial in ensuring that eligible voters can participate in the democratic process.

In the southern region, the registration is being conducted in the districts of Machinga, Neno, Phalombe, Balaka, Chiradzulu, and Mulanje. However, reports from various districts indicate a concerning trend: the number of individuals registering to vote is relatively low.

In Phalombe, the registration process has been smooth, with no significant issues reported. Conversely, in Machinga, officials at the registration centers located at educational offices expressed frustration due to a lack of adequate facilities, such as seating arrangements for those waiting to register.

Additionally, in Chiradzulu, at the Muluma registration center, staff from the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) faced challenges as they relied on power banks for their equipment because the generator at the site ran out of fuel.

These early observations in highlight the need for improved resources and infrastructure to support the voter registration process, ensuring that all eligible citizens can register and exercise their democratic rights in the upcoming elections.
