What’s Hot On Cape Town’s Fast Food Scene

On the hunt for the best fast food in Cape Town while you’re visiting? You’re in for a treat. Our city is packed with incredible food options, but there are a few legendary spots you must try when you’re here. Think bold flavours, generous portions, and the kind of local favourites people keep coming back for.

We’ve rounded up our top picks for the best takeaways in Cape Town, perfect for beach days, road trips, late-night cravings, or when you just want something seriously satisfying without the fuss. If you’re looking to taste the real flavour of the Mother City, start right here.

Fish and Chips

Blessed with two coastlines and a variety of fresh fish, straight off the boats and into fryers, Cape Town has plenty of fish and chip shops dotted along its beautiful shores. Each establishment carefully prepares its offering with secret recipes and traditional cooking methods, resulting in a deep-fried combo enjoyed by both locals and visitors.

We recommend:

Kalky’s: Located at Kalk Bay Harbour, Kalk Bay. Call +27 21 788 1726

Fish on the Rocks: Located at Far End Harbour Road, Hout Bay. Call +27 21 790 1153

Lusitania Fisheries: Located at 49a Waterkant Street, Cape Town City Centre. Call +27 87 351 8383

Boerewors Rolls

Boerewors, directly translated from Afrikaans means “Farmer’s sausage”, has been munched away by locals and visitors for generations. This sausage is braaied (BBQed) to juicy perfection before it slips into a fresh hotdog bun. Caramelised onions and your choice of sauce add the finishing trimmings to another proudly South African meal.

We recommend:

Nomzamo Butchery: Located at Shop 9, Washington Street, Langa. Call +27 73 762 9365

LA Farms: Located at 105 Main Rd, Green Point. Call +27 21 434 1111

Obs Cafe: 115 Lower Main Rd, Observatory. Call +27 21 007 1397

Vienna and Chips Parcel

Served in all sizes, the last legendary local favourite is the vienna and chips parcel. Think deep-fried polony, vienna or Russian sausages, served on a bed of crispy-fried potato chips, spiced with BBQ, peri-peri or masala, and covered in a sauce of your choosing.

We recommend:

Aneesa’s: Located at 86 Ottery Rd, Wynberg. Call +27 21 797 5682 / 8042

Nabeela’s Fast Food:
Located at 9 Ottery Rd, Wynberg. Call +27 217973780

Mariam’s Kitchen:
Located at 31 Heerengracht St, Foreshore. Call +27 21 421 3636

Gatsby

This iconic monster of a meal has its roots in the Athlone area. Described as a long sandwich/sub filled with different meats, hot chips, spices, and sauces. A single gatsby feeds four people, while other eaters precariously take on this mammoth meal by themselves.

We recommend:

Cosy Corner: 119 Ottery Rd, Wynberg. Call +27 21 797 2498

Golden Dish: Located at Shop 1 Block 1, Corner of 1 Klipfontein and, Gatesville Shopping Centre, Hazel Rd, Gatesville. Call 27 21 633 7864

Super Fisheries: Located at 63 Old Klipfontein Rd, Athlone. Call +27 21 696 9833

Koeksister & Koesister

No trip to Cape Town is complete without the famous sweet and syrupy duo, the koeksister and koesister. Yes, there is a difference! Koesisters are a Cape Malay delicacy, oval dough balls with a doughnut-like texture, flavoured with spices and naartjie peel and darker in colour. The koeksister, however, is a golden, twisted plait, crisp on the outside and covered with a sweet syrup.

We recommend:

Farieda’s Koeksisters: Located at 580 Lansdowne Rd, Lansdowne. Call +27 76 760 8550 or email delicacies@fariedas.co.za

Bo-Kaap Deli: Located at 97, 114 Church St, Bokaap. Call +27 763466207.

Arpin Koeksisters: Located at Nathan Mallach St, N1 City. Call +27 83 737 0538

Smash Burgers

If there’s one global food trend Cape Town has embraced with serious enthusiasm, it’s the smash burger. Think juicy beef patties pressed onto a hot grill until the edges crisp up perfectly, topped with melted cheese, pickles and house-made sauces, all tucked into a soft toasted bun. It’s indulgent and worth the extra calories.

We recommend:

BRASH: Located at 90 Regent Rd, Sea Point. Call +27 21 002 8376

Le Pickle: Located at Quarter Lifestyle Village, 8 Jarvis St, De Waterkant. Call +27 61 581 9662.

Smasht: 54 Belvedere Rd, Rondebosch. Call +27 76 151 5010

Bunny Chow

Originally from Durban but firmly loved in the Mother City, the bunny chow is a hollowed-out loaf of bread filled with a curry of your choice: chicken, lamb or beans. You can share it or devour it on your own.

We recommend:

The Burner: Located at 3 Esplanade Rd, Century City. Call +27 21 422 3301

Sundoo Sea Point: Located at 77 Regent Rd, Sea Point. Call +27 21 300 5779

Taj Cape Town: Located at 1 Wale Street corner Saint Georges Mall, Wale St. Call +27 21 819 2000

Salomie

Another Cape Malay favourite, the salomie is wrapped in a thick, buttery, flaky roti and filled with a curry of your choice. It’s Cape Town’s answer to a wrap, but with bigger flavour and real Cape Town roots.

We recommend:

Wembley Roadhouse: Located at Belgravia Road, Athlone. Call +27 21 637 1333

Cosy Corner: Located at 119 Ottery Rd, Wynberg. Call +27 21 797 2498

Mariams Kitchen: Located at 31 Heerengracht St, Foreshore. Call +27 21 421 3636

Kota

Another township-born favourite that has become a staple on Cape Town’s fast food scene is the kota. Made from a hollowed-out quarter loaf of bread, this street food classic is loaded with slap chips (fries), polony, viennas, cheese, atchar and a generous squeeze of sauces. Some versions level things up with a burger patty or fried egg.

We recommend:

Bozza Kota Bar: Located at the Cnr of Parklands Main Road & Gie Rd, Parklands. Call +27 78 944 3214

Kota Vibes: Located at Brothers Supermarket Side, 110 Main Rd, Mowbray. Call +27 63 6449 227

The Ultimate Cape Town Beach Guide for Every Type of Traveller

Cape Town beaches offer something for everyone, from romantic picnics and sunbathing to surfing and even taking selfies with penguins (from a safe distance, of course). Whether you’re looking for a quiet escape or a fun photo opportunity, Cape Town’s beaches are sure to impress.

Here are some of our suggestions:

Llandudno

Location: Leeukoppie Road, Llandudno
Perfect For: Couples

Llandudno is a firm favourite with couples. Known as one of Cape Town’s most exclusive and secluded beaches, beachgoers can look forward to magical sunsets and stunning views. Surrounded by lush natural bush and milkwood forests, the beach offers a serene escape into nature. On either side, you’ll find Judas Peak and Klein Leeukoppie (affectionately known as “Little Lion’s Head”). The sea is flanked by dramatic granite boulders, with caves tucked away among the rocks. No dogs are allowed between 9am-6pm from November until March.

Llandudno

Clifton 4th

Protected from the blustering Southeaster, Clifton 4th Beach attracts a vibrant crowd of beautiful people throughout the holiday season. Models, fashionistas and visitors from across the globe flock to this slice of Cape Town paradise, drawn by its powdery white sand, shimmering waters, and postcard-perfect views. During the summer months, you’ll find yourself surrounded by sunbathers, frisbee players, and volleyball enthusiasts, all enjoying the beach’s lively atmosphere.

Lifeguards are on duty during the Blue Flag season (December until March). Try to arrive early as parking is limited.

Camps Bay Beach

Location: Victoria Road, Camps Bay
Perfect For: Families

Lined with trendy restaurants, delectable ice cream parlours and bustling beach activities, the Camps Bay strip provides plenty of family-friendly fun. Relax on the grassy banks under palm trees for an afternoon picnic or dip into the frosty Atlantic Sea to cool down. Lifeguards are on duty during the summer months.

Boulders Beach

Location: Kleintuin Road, Simon’s Town
Perfect For: Selfies with African Penguins

Located within the Table Mountain National Park, Boulders Beach takes its name from the ancient granite rocks that line the area, providing shelter for the endangered penguins. Spend the day with the world-renowned colony of African penguins (ensure you always maintain a safe distance), indulge in a picnic, and take a dip in the warm waters, all in one afternoon. There are many restaurants in and around the area if you want to enjoy sundowners after.

Muizenberg Beach

Location: Beach Road, Muizenberg
Perfect For: Surfing and swimming

Muizenberg Beach is one of Cape Town’s hottest surf spots, and it’s easy to see why. This lively beach is packed year-round with shortboard shredders, stylish longboarders, wave-riding Stand Up Paddleboarders, and energetic swimmers. At the far end of the beach, Surfers’ Corner is the perfect spot for novice and beginner surfers to catch their first waves, while nearby surf shops offer board rentals and lessons for those eager to learn. And with lifeguards on duty during the summer months, you can feel safe while enjoying the waves.

Muizenberg

Lagoon Beach

Location: Lagoon Gate Drive, Milnerton
Perfect For: Sunsets

Located a stone’s throw away from the Milnerton lighthouse, Lagoon Beach is one of the best spots to experience a jaw-dropping Cape sunset. Take your picnic basket and settle down on the soft sandy shore or book a table at one of the restaurants lining the beachfront to see the red, pink, orange and purple hues painted across the sky. Water enthusiasts might want to grab their favourite craft and head out for an epic sunset session.

Bloubergstrand Beach

Location: Marine Drive, Cape Town
Perfect For: Windsurfing, kitesurfing, and stunning views of Table Mountain and Robben Island

Capture stunning views of Table Bay, Table Mountain and Robben Island from Bloubergstrand Beach. This incredible stretch of coastline garners a well-deserved international reputation as one of the best windsurfing and kitesurfing areas in the world. The prevailing winds and powerful open ocean swell allow boarders to showcase unbelievable aerial acrobatics. A must-see spectacle while enjoying a picnic. The promenade is also popular for joggers, dog walkers, and anyone who wants to soak up the views during a walk.

Blouberg Beach

Fish Hoek

Location:  Beach Road, Fish Hoek
Perfect For: Swimming, surfing, paddle boating, sunsets

Fish Hoek Beach is an idyllic spot to watch breathtaking sunsets, take a refreshing swim, or indulge in thrilling water sports, from paddle boating to surfing. With lifeguards and shark spotters on duty, you can enjoy the water safely. The pet-friendly beach is perfect to enjoy with friends and family.

General Beach Safety Tips

  • Always choose a lifeguarded beach. Swim between the designated red and yellow lifeguard flags.
  • Supervise your kids, family and friends in the water, even in the lifeguarded flagged zone.
  • Take time to read the information signage when entering a beach.
  • Teach your kids to always go to the lifeguards if they get lost.
  • If you find yourself in trouble, do not panic. Try to float on your back, raise your arms, and call for help. Never try to swim against a rip current.
  • Never use inflatables such as small boats or mattresses at the beach.
  • If you see someone in trouble, alert the lifeguards or call sea rescue.
  • Never enter the water to rescue someone without calling emergency services first. Also, never enter the water without emergency flotation like the NSRI pink rescue buoy, found at most beaches.
  • Be sure to stay hydrated and protected from the sun.

My Cape Town: Joe Barber’s Boeta Gamat

The one-half of the funny Joe Barber duo, Boeta Gamat (played by David Isaacs), is venturing out to the Deep South on his own for the first time.

The award-winning Joe Barber is one of South Africa’s longest-running comedy shows. Set in a barber shop, it takes a real look into Cape Town and the Cape Flats. While Boeta Joe (played by Oscar Petersen) has gone back to the books to complete his studies, Gamat is making time to tick off some bucket list adventures in Cape Town.

This is his half-day itinerary to explore the southern side of the city:

People’s Train

His preferred mode of transport for his day of exploration is the popular PRASA People’s Train, which travels along various routes in the city. Boeta Gamat is taking the Southern Line, which runs to Muizenberg, Kalk Bay, and Fish Hoek. The People’s Train is a pocket-friendly way to get around the city. During special events, there are jazz trips, book clubs, and other themed journeys. The seaside trip to Muizenberg and Kalk Bay is popular with both locals and visitors. He boards the train at the station nearest to his home in Observatory. It is a 40-minute ride, depending on any delays along the way, to Muizenberg.

“I’m so excited to get on the train. It’s a lekker way to see the best of our city and meet the locals,” he says.

Location: Various train stations throughout the city. If you are based in the Cape Town CBD, take the train from the Cape Town station.
Price: Ticket prices start from just R7.
Website: Find train times and routes here

Muizenberg

His first stop is Muizenberg, known for its laidback charm, antique stores, surfing, and its colourful beach huts.

“Surfing actually started in Muizenberg in the early 1900s, and those colourful beach huts? They were built so surfers could change into their costumes,” Boeta Gamat says.

When he’s in town, he always pops by to see his mate Yani Trout at the Reef Surf Shop. You can grab surfing and diving gear, pick up a new board, or just have a coffee and watch the waves. Gamat isn’t hitting the surf today, but he loves to “kom kyk”, a local phrase meaning to “come and see” what’s happening. He catches up with Yani, who teaches children and adults how to surf at Muizenberg Beach.

Location: 52 Beach Rd, Muizenberg
Price: Various
Website: Reef Surf Shop

Kalk Bay

A short hop on the train later, and Boeta Gamat rolls into Kalk Bay, ready for lunch and a bit of local mingling. Not surprisingly, he’s stops for plenty of selfies along the way, but he takes it all in stride.

Kalk Bay is one of the last working harbours on the Cape Peninsula, where you can buy fresh fish straight from the fishermen. Boeta loves wandering through the harbour, taking in the salty breeze and watching the boats bob in the water, before working up a proper appetite for fish and chips at Kalky’s.

This Kalk Bay institution sits right on the harbour and serves fresh, no-fuss fish and chips that hit the spot every time. “Go early to secure your seat,” he says, tucking into his portion of hake and chips with a satisfied grin. “Now, this is My Cape Town!”

Miss Universe Owner Charged with Drugs, Arms and Fuel Trafficking: Report

Miss Universe owner Raúl Rocha has reportedly been charged with trafficking drugs, arms and fuel by Mexico’s Attorney General’s Office.

According to a Wednesday, November 26, report by Mexican newspaper Reforma, Rocha was charged for alleged involvement in trafficking the items between Guatemala and Mexico. Mexico’s Attorney General’s Office (FRG) claimed that Rocha is a leader of a criminal organization that smuggles fuel in boats through the Usumacinta River before trucking it to Mexico.

The outlet reported that an agent in Mexico’s Specialized Prosecutor’s Office for Organized Crime requested an arrest warrant for Rocha on charges of organized crime in August.

The FRG reportedly raided several residences. The government office claimed they obtained records of monetary contributions from Rocha to the alleged criminal enterprise. The amount totaled 2.1 million pesos, which equals around $114,405.

OnlyFans Star Arrested After Her Boyfriend Found Dismembered: Report

According to the arrest warrant, which was obtained by Reforma, the FRG alleged that Rocha has “connections with politicians and authorities at all three levels of government to deliberately carry out their mission, which includes the sale of hydrocarbons, narcotics, and the trafficking and sale of large quantities of weapons of war.”

Reforma also reported that Rocha spoke to the FGR in October to negotiate a plea bargain and will allegedly share information for immunity from prosecution.

Us Weekly has reached out to the Miss Universe organization for comment.

Rocha’s alleged legal issues is the latest scandal to plague the Miss Universe organization. Earlier this year, pageant executive Nawat Itsaragrisi made headlines after he publicly insulted Miss Mexico Fátima Bosch.

“He called me dumb because he has issues with the organization, and I think that’s unfair,” Bosch told the press while explaining the incident, which was captured on video that has since gone viral.

Several beauty queens showed solidarity for Bosch by walking out of the pre-pageant event. Rocha ultimately diminished Itsaragrisi’s role in the pageant in the wake of the scandal.

“I will not allow the values of respect and dignity toward women to be violated. Unfortunately, Nawat has forgotten the true meaning of what it means to be a genuine host,” Rocha said at the time. “It means to demonstrate to all delegates of all countries that he, as a host, has the obligation to serve them, assist them and support them. And to ensure they have a unique life experience filled with kindness and courtesy.”

Bosch ultimately went on to win the competition. In her speech, Bosch expressed her desire to be a positive ambassador for the organization.

“I will put my voice and the power in the service of others because nowadays, we are here to speak up, to make change and have everything in view because we are women and the brave ones that stand up are the ones that will make history,” she said.

Earlier on Wednesday, news broke that a warrant was reportedly issued for Miss Universe co-owner Jakapong “Anne” Jakrajutatip’s arrest after failing to appear in court in Bangkok for her fraud case. Officials reportedly deemed Jakrajutatip as a flight risk. Jakrajutatip resigned from Miss Universe in June. The Miss Universe Organization previously stated that Jakrajutatip’s fraud case “legal proceedings are entirely separate.”

When Did Below Deck’s Kate and Captain Lee Stop Speaking? What We Know

Kate Chastain and Captain Lee Rosbach falling out of touch is arguably one of the biggest offscreen twists in Below Deck history.

The duo started working together in 2014 when Kate joined season 2 of Below Deck. They remained the only consistent cast members from season to season until Kate announced her exit after five years.

“After many months of reflection and internal discussions, I have chosen to make a transition this year in starting to carve out a progressive new land based role,” she wrote via Instagram in 2020. “I intend to step back as a senior member of the Below Deck Family and work to become financially independent, while continuing to fully support His Majesty Andy Cohen.”

Lee, who was on the show since its debut, surprised fans when he confirmed his exit three years later. Kate and Lee reunited on Couch Talk With Captain Lee and Kate, which aired for one season in 2023.

Biggest ‘Below Deck’ Feuds — and Where the Relationships Stand Today

On Below Deck, Lee was replaced with Captain Kerry Titheradge — but not before Captain Sandy Yawn briefly filled in while Lee faced health issues during his last season on the show.

After Lee publicly questioned how Sandy ran things in his absence, Kate showed support for them both. As the drama died down, fans noticed that Lee and Kate were no longer in contact, which she has since confirmed.

Keep scrolling for a breakdown of their falling out:

After their respective exits from Below Deck, Kate and Lee reunited on Couch Talk With Captain Lee and Kate, which aired for one season in October 2023. They spent time together at BravoCon one month later, where Us caught them for a joint interview.

June 2024

After Lee publicly questioned Sandy, Kate weighed in on the back and forth.

“I think that Sandy is a really talented captain. She always has been. I think she drives the boat the best out of any captain in any Below Deck franchise,” Kate told Us. “I don’t think that any of Lee’s criticisms of her were necessarily fair [or] warranted.”

She continued: “Just like with any other friends, I’m not going to take sides or end a friendship if that’s not how I feel.”

During an interview with Us, Kate offered an update on her friendship with Lee, saying, “I moved away from Fort Lauderdale and obviously we don’t work on boats together anymore. But he was always such a big part of my life that we’ve lost touch a little bit. But I wish him very well.”

November 2025

“I’m just so busy with my toddler,” Kate shared with Us while attending BravoCon 2025 in Las Vegas. “I think it happens when you work with somebody.”

Kate clarified why she was no longer in touch with Lee. “You’ve got something in common to talk about — and now we don’t,” she added. “The ship has sailed. I’m happy for him and I’m happy for me.”

Tips For Your Cape Town Summer Beach Days

Summer is here and many visitors and locals will be flocking to their nearest beaches for a cool-down. Before you take a dip, it’s worth brushing up on a few simple rules that keeps everyone safe and our beaches beautiful.

Here’s everything you need to know for a fun, fuss-free day by the sea.

Safety First

The city has a few clear rules in place. These are set out in the City’s Coastal By-law and other local regulations designed to ensure everyone has the best experience when exploring the city. You’ll find easy-to-read signs at every beach explaining what’s allowed, so take a moment to check them when you arrive.

What’s a definite “no” on the beach?

According to Chapter 4 of the Coastal By-law, here are some key things to remember:

· No fires, fireworks, or Chinese lanterns on the beach.

· No motorised boats or jet skis within 100 metres of swimmers or within 100 m of the low-water mark in a bathing area

· No fishing in tidal pools or close to bathing areas (within 100 metres).

· No overnight camping or closed shelters.

· No loudspeakers, amplifiers, or similar equipment. If found, the equipment will be confiscated.

· No alcohol or drugs

· You are not allowed to bathe, dive, snorkel, or play within 50 m of/ near a jetty or designated public launch site.

· No hawking or unauthorised performances

Anyone breaking these by-laws can face fines ranging between R500-R2500, and any illegal goods will be confiscated. You can read the full Coastal By-law here.

Water Safety: Be Smart in the Surf

Cape Town’s beaches are stunning, but the ocean can be unpredictable. That’s why the City’s Recreation and Parks Department runs a year-round Drowning Prevention Programme. Lifeguards are stationed at 29 beaches, tidal pools, and popular coastal spots during the busy summer months.

Here are the top four tips to remember at the beach or when swimming:

· Swim only where lifeguards are on duty and always look for the red and yellow flags marking the safest bathing areas.

· Watch out for rip currents.

· Never swim if you have consumed alcohol.

· Always actively monitor children in and around water

So, What Can You Do?

Plan ahead: Check which beaches have lifeguards on duty.

Pack wisely: Sunscreen, water, and snacks.

Respect the rules: They’re there for everyone’s protection.

Be mindful of others: A little courtesy goes a long way in keeping our beaches enjoyable for all.

Venezuela Escalation, Shutdown Layoffs Paused, Military Pay

President Trump escalates pressure on Venezuela, authorizing covert CIA operations and striking suspected drug boats.
