Sports Analyst Nyirenda cautions NAM’s 15 youngster players inclusion for world cup preps

……Aren’t we placing the cart before horse?…..

By Edwin Mbewe

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-The Netball Association of Malawi (NAM) has released names of 25 players to start preparations for the 2023 Netball World Cup slated for South Africa between July 28th to 6th August 2023.

However, out of the total number 15 players are from developmental teams, Under 17,19,20 and under 23 which has shocked the veteran sports analyst Charles Nyirenda.

Nyirenda observes that NAM is placing the cart before the horse.

“How do we talk of players from basically nowhere getting picked for a serious assignment World cup with National team side? How long does it take to groom someone to become a notable commodity in the National team? Any way let me comment when the final list comes out”, wonders Nyirenda.

“I have been following the developments in netball, the association seems to run out of options because the players who are overseas are ageing together and something has to be done fast on the domestic front to fill the gap. I consider this call up as a means of exposing future stars and bringing them to camp is the 1st step of slow albeit gradual integration”, he added.

The camp is expected to start from February 26 to March 10, 2023 in Blantyre.

NAM Technical Director Samuel Kanyenda said the association scouted youngsters into the squad following trials conducted in Lilongwe fortnight ago.

“We play fast game than our counterparts in the world hence the inclusion of the youthful players who have shown those characters”, says Kanyenda.

Kanyenda also added that the association is closely monitoring professionals for national team call up ahead of world cup games saying are performing in their respective clubs.

The full list of the 25 players is as follows:

Bitter pill for Blantyre football fans

Big Bullets in action

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)—As it is already clear that the stadium projects for Mighty Be Forward Wanderers and Nyasa Big Bullets will be discontinued under the new Tonse Alliance government, Minister of Youth and Sports Ulemu Msungama has also hinted at abandoning plans to build a new stadium at Njamba Freedom Park in Blantyre, a project which was proposed by the previous Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) regime.

Msungama, who is not in good terms with Football Association of Malawi (FAM) Walter Nyamilandu, says his ministry will demolish Kamuzu Stadium to build a new one should his ministry’s proposal be approved by relevant authorities and stakeholders.

Speaking to media on Tuesday, Msungama said there was no logic in building a new stadium—projected to cost K110 billion— barely a kilometre away from an existing one.

“My suggestion, which I will pursue with relevant authorities and stakeholders, is that we have Kamuzu Stadium which is historically an icon and the way forward should be to demolish it and build a modern facility at the same place. After all, it is centrally located,” said Msungama.

“What will be the purpose of building a new stadium when we have another one just a stone throw away which is in a dilapidated state when we can demolish it and build another one, thereby saving resources?” he queried.

His proposal obviously means Blantyre will have no stadium for the whole period of reconstruction of the Kamuzu Stadium, a development which is likely to attract furry from the football fans in the Commercial City where two football giants Mighty Wanderers and Big Bullets is their base.

However, football analyst Charles Nyirenda has agreed with the minister arguing it will cut costs.

“I fully agree with his sentiments. It will cut costs using the same space where Kamuzu Stadium is located to build another stadium.Further to that, Kamuzu Stadium premises are centrally located and the majority of people just walk there, it’s also spacious.

“Moreover, the imaginary Njamba Stadium scheme was a political gimmick. Just from the blue people were promised the moon and in the end, the project wasn’t on the official government infrastructure development agenda. No wonder, the project is just fizzling out the way it popped up,” said Nyirenda.

But another football analyst Humphrey Mvula suggested that before proceeding with the new thinking, the minister should consult  his Cabinet colleagues to appreciate the ramifications of  his decision.

He said: “This is taking into consideration that the old stadium was declared as a monument to be preserved as a heritage. Besides, the social /political implications of having no stadium in Blantyre while a new stadium is being reconstructed will be difficult to mitigate for the people of Southern Region.”

In January this year, the Peter Mutharika administration announced that it had shelved plans to construct a new stadium in Blantyre, opting to prioritise stadia projects for privately-owned teams—Nyasa Big Bullets and Be Forward Wanderers.

Government did not allocate funding for the project in the 2019/20 budget. It has also not allocated funds for the same in the current provisional four-month budget.

The project was last allocated funding in the 2018/19 Budget when it got K500 million while in the 2017/18 Budget, it got K1.5 billion for designs and start-up work.

However, there is nothing on the ground so far.

Goal drought in Malawi top flight league worries football pundit; asks FAM to intervene

Goal draught in Malawi top flight league worries football pundit; asks FAM to interveneFootball pundit in Malawi has asked the Football Association of Malawi (FAM) as well as the Super League of Malawi (Sulom) to summon all the TNM Super League Coaches to explain on the drought of goals in the ongoing TNM Super League first round.

The pundit, Charles ‘Grand master’ Nyirenda noted that such development strongly affects national team performance.

“We cannot say that the League has started well this year especially when looking on the number of goals scored and games drawn in the first leg,” said Nyirenda.

“Imagine, the teams have just drawn in almost half of the games played so far and this is a sign that something is wrong and must be corrected,” said Nyirenda.

According to Nyirenda “FAM and Sulom should immediately intervene and take an appropriate action because this is one of the major problems affecting our nation team.”

Nyirenda however spoke highly of Karonga United for what he described as a good start in the league despite not wining any game out of the four games played so far.

“To Karonga United, it’s a good start especially when we look at how and when it entered the league. And I believe that the team will start winning in the coming two or three games,” added Nyirenda.

Chairperson for Karonga United Alufeyo Chipanga Banda has challenged that his team will finish in the top seven this season and that the draw results they are getting are part of warning to other teams in the League.

Karonga United has played four games, lost one at home and drawn three with one at home and two away.
