Chitipa’s FC Ntafu on spot to sink Lions: 2023 TNM Super League

KARONGA-(MaraviPost)-Ramadhan Ntafu’s 88th-minute penalty was enough as title hopefuls Chitipa United earned a hard-fought 1-0 win over a struggling Red Lions at the Karonga Stadium on Saturday, September 30, 2023.

Ntafu who was dropped to the bench for this encounter came on at half time and made no mistake from 12 yards after the referee had pointed to the spot following a foul on Lorenzo Ghedo.

The match which was not a classic encounter by any means saw the home side do enough to collect three vital points in their hunt for the TNM Super League championship.

The visitors which faced an uphill task to maintain their top-flight status were the better side in the second half and forced the Chitipa United keeper George Chikooka to a couple of saves.

However, having the majority of the possession could not turn it to regular meaningful chances as the home side’s defence stood strong to earn the three points.

Speaking in a post-match interview Chitipa United’s coach McDonald Mtetemera, said he was pleased to come out of a tough encounter with all the three points as they were not at their best.

“It wasn’t a perfect performance as I know we can play better but at this stage of the season all that matters is all the maximum points because every team is battling hard to win matches for their own reasons,” he said.

However, Red Lions officials declined to grant a post-match interview to the gathered media as they directed the media to speak to the officiating panel of the game instead.

With the win Chitipa United clime up to second on the league standings with 42 points to their name from 23 matches while Red Lions remain languishing in 15th place with only 18 points to their name from the same number of played matches.

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-The Lions of Chitipa roared triumphantly at Mpira Stadium in Blantyre on Wednesday, scoring two second-half goals to secure maximum points and claim the top position in the league table, while Bangwe All Stars FC squandered numerous opportunities.

Chitipa United broke the deadlock in the 80th minute through Lorenzo Ghedo, ending a match that seemed destined for a goalless stalemate.

In the dying minutes of the second half, Godfrey Kwiyokwa netted the second goal, sealing a victory for the Lions.

The victory propelled them to the summit of the TNM Superleague with 39 points, displacing defending champions FCB Nyasa Big Bullets FC, who have 37 points from 18 games, while Chitipa has played 21.

Chikumbutso Salima of the home team missed a crucial one-on-one opportunity with goalkeeper Chikooka, who was outstanding throughout the match.

His exceptional performance not only benefited the team but also earned him the Farmers Organization Limited Player of the Match award.

Bangwe, in search of goals, made several changes; Sheriff Shamama replaced James Tambwali, Mathews Masamba, and Emanuel Saviel replaced Aaron Chilipa and Kondwani Chilembwe.

Chitipa United FC now holds the top spot with 39 points from 21 games, followed by FCB Nyasa Big Bullets FC with 37 points from 18 games.

Mighty Mukuru Wanderers FC is in third place with 36 points from 19 games, and Silver Strikers FC sits in fourth place with 33 points from 19 games.

Reacting after the match Bangwe All Stars FC Head Coach Abel Mkandawire said the match was good and created a lot of chances.

Mkandawire however acknowledged Chitipa United FC came for the party today hence making several crucial saves.

“We are performing well as Bangwe All Stars FC, and what we need to do is motivate the boys,” Mkandawire said.

Chitipa United FC Head Coach McDonald Mtetemera attributed the victory to the second-half changes he made.

“Our team relies on every player. You saw the three changes we made completely changed the complexion of the game, and we played our style of football.

“I am not particularly thrilled about being at the top of the table, my primary goal in Chitipa was to rebrand the team into a force to be reckoned with in the next two years. Nevertheless, I’m pleased that the boys are executing our instructions,” says Mtetemera.

Meanwhile, in Chitowe, Dwangwa MAFCO FC defeated Civil Service United FC 2-0, courtesy of goals from Stain Malata in the 31st and 34th minutes.

The victory allowed MAFCO FC to move out of the relegation zone with 24 points, securing the 12th position from 21 games.

Civil Service United FC now occupies the 11th position with 24 points from 20 games, having suffered back-to-back losses.

The team entered Tuesday’s game after a 3-2 loss to FCB Nyasa Big Bullets FC.

Civil next challenge is against the struggling Blue Eagles FC, which returned to the relegation zone with 21 points from 20 games, currently sitting in 14th place.

Chitipa down TN Stars, boost survival hopes in TNM Super League

KARONGA-(MaraviPost)-Chitipa United’s bid to pull off a great escape from the relegation zone received a major boost after overcoming TN Stars 1-0 in a TNM Super League match played at Karonga Stadium on Sunday.

Alex Benson proved the match winner as his first half header insured the homes side live to fight another day in the elite league.

The match played in front of a sizable but vocal partisan home crowd saw the hosts begin the match strongly in a bid to reignite their fading survival hopes.

The lively Emmanuel Muyira took the game to the visitors as he went on a one man mission firing two early warning efforts on the away side’s goal.

The same Muyira went close again from a direct free kick which went narrowly over the bar with TN Stars keeper Blackson Kotei rooted to the spot.

However Chitipa United’s first half pressure finally yielded a deserved goal as Alex Benson coolly headed in from a right wing cross in the 42nd minute.

In the second half Chitipa United changed tactics as they played more a defensive game as they soaked up the pressure and played more on the counterattack.

The visitors who earned a point on Saturday against Karonga United looked disjointed as they failed to create any meaningful chances throughout the encounter.

With the win Chitipa United have moved level on points with 13th place Blue Eagles on 29 points however Eagles have a game in hand and have a superior goal-deference of 18 over embattled Chitipa while TN Stars remain in 8th on the log table with 40 points to their name from 28 matches.

Speaking in a post-match interview Chitipa United coach Christopher Nyambose, expressed delight in his side performance in the victory.

“It was a must win match today and I thought we handled the pressure of needing to win very well and were really fantastic and we were good value for the points and we now live to fight another day.”

However TN Stars coach Joseph Malijani, said his charges were second best throughout the encounter hence deserved to lose.

“We simply did not turn up today we were really lethargic for most of the game that is why we deserved to get nothing from the game,” said a frustrated Malijani.
