Mutharika won the elections but Justice was twisted – DPP Secretary General Grizelder Jeffrey

Ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) and its new partner United Democratic Progressive Party are today Wednesday in a joint peaceful march in the capital city Lilongwe protesting the nullification of the May 2019 presidential election results by the Constitution Court

LILONGWE (MaraviPost): As thousands and thousands of joint DPP and UDF supporters flooded the streets of Lilongwe in a peaceful march in the capital city Lilongwe protesting the nullification of the May 2019 presidential election results by the Constitution Court, DPP Secretary General Grizelder Jeffrey said the party is convinced that Peter Mutharika won the election but justice was twisted.

The marches are in reaction to the Constitutional Court judges that delivered their verdict on the Presidential election case, Nullifying the victory of the DPP and Peter Mutharika and vice president Everton Chimulirenji (56 years old) who was the de-facto Vice President of Malawi under president Peter Mutharika from May 2019 to February 3rd 2020.

DPP supporters demos in Lilongwe

However, being a statesman, The Malawi President Peter Mutharika accepted the judgment with dignity. Instead of leading violent protests like Saulos Chilima of UTM and Lazarus Chakwera of the Malawi Congress Party (MCP), The Malawi President observed that the judgment had errors that needed to be corrected – for the sake of national good.

In case we need reminding, Malawi President Peter Mutharika has worked globally in the field of international justice. He is an expert on international economic law, international law and comparative constitutional law.

“We consider the judgement as a serious subversion of justice, an attack on our democratic systems and an attempt to undermine the will of the people.

“As it stands, the judgment, if not cured, represents a flawed precedence for all the elections in all future elections in the country. In fact, this judgment inaugurates the death of Malawi’s democracy.”

So, these demonstrations are a mobilizing of the DPP supporters as they await the ruling of the appeal from the supreme court of appeal.

Fired pro-Chilima DPP regional governor goes to court

Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) deputy regional governor (North) Afiki Mbewe has challenged his dismissal and instructed his lawyer to take to court the party national executive committee (NEC) member Khwauli Msiska.

Christon Ghambi, lawyer representing Mbewe, said in an interview his client is suing for defamation and seeking reinstatement in his position.

Said the lawyer: “We have not received any word or action from the DPP within the five days we had given them… So, my client has instructed me to commence a court action.”

Mbewe was fired a fortnight ago for openly supporting calls that Vice-President Saulos Chilima, 45, should lead the DPP in the 2019 Tripartite Elections and not 79-year-old Peter Mutharika.

In an interview yesterday, Mbewe said DPP was yet to approach him on the matter.

He said: “The Chilima Movement continues to gain ground everyday and these threats only make us stronger. We are moving forward and most importantly, we are going to that convention and give the mantle to Chilima.”

During a media briefing in Mzuzu, Msiska said they resolved to remove Mbewe from the party because he was a “confusionist and a liar”.

But on May 1 2018, through Ghambi, Mbewe gave the DPP five days to reverse the decision or face a K10 million defamation claim on the part of Msiska and demand for reinstatement.

DPP secretary general Grizelder Jeffrey, to whom the communication was addressed, did not pick up her phone despite several attempts as did DPP governor for the North Kenneth Sanga.

However, in an earlier interview, Sanga said Mbewe had every right to take legal action.
