Sundays with Cedrick: A Look at DPP’s Presidential Candidates

By Cedrick Ngalande

The then Israeli Foreign Minister, Abban Eban, once referred to Israel’s neighbors as people who “never missed an opportunity to miss an opportunity”. There are times in the world when all proverbial stars line up for a certain outcome, but the opportunity still gets missed because of carelessness and lack of foresight.

By all accounts, the Tonse alliance is at its lowest point today. Divisions are growing; the president is grappling with unprecedented pandemic and in the process failing to fulfill his most basic promises. He promised to reshuffle cabinet in December, he has not yet done so; he promised 1 million jobs, but available evidence appears to show that Malawi is in fact losing jobs; and after bumbling with the K6.2 billion scandal, Dr Chakwera announced the firing of certain individuals who it now appears are not really fired.

In a normal world, while the Tonse alliance is doing a good job of discrediting itself, the DPP would have been busy silently rebuilding itself under its current leadership. Then in 2024 a much stronger DPP would emerge, hold a convention, and pivot into the general election with momentum from the convention. History has shown that, everything else considered, a party becomes very formidable when it holds its convention and anoints its candidate awfully close to the general elections. Energy from party conventions is what normally catapults candidates into election wins.

Of course, that is not what is happening in the DPP world. People are so impatient that they have already started campaigning for party presidency. Not only has the campaigning started, but party infighting has also shown up – I mean ‘fighting’ literally.

HONOURABLE KONDWANI NANKHUMWA, MP, – President Chakwera must be informed that if an economy, as small as ours, was robbed of that sum of money, his administration would not have found any penny in the government coffers.

Three candidates have already come forward. And for all their impatience, it is surprising to see how mediocre they are. The first of the pack is Hon Kondwani Nankhumwa. He comes with quiet an impressive background. He is the leader of opposition in parliament and the vice president of the DPP responsible for the southern religion. A businessman, Nankhumwa’s only style of campaigning is distributing stuff. For some time, he was regarded as a successor to APM. But he has now fallen out of grace with the party. A few hours ago, thugs claiming to be associated with him physically attacked the party’s publicity secretary at a press conference.

His chances of winning the DPP presidency are falling fast. Even if he were to win the DPP presidency, there is very slim chance that he can beat Chakwera. To this day Hon Namkhumwa, who has spent many weeks zigzagging the country, has said nothing about his strategy for making Malawi a better nation. He has not said why he is better than Chakwera, and why people should choose him in the 2025 elections. Hon. Nankhumwa’s only path to the presidency would be to get the DPP team up with the UTM and then accept the running mate role in the alliance.

Kabambe
Dr Dalitso Kabambe DPP Presidential hopeful

The next candidate is the newcomer to politics, Dr Dalitso Kabambe. An economist and former Reserve Bank governor, Dr Kabambe has already started crisscrossing the country. The man speaks like a church elder from Manjalende village Church. He has only one speech which he repeats all over the country: “I was with Bingu, I was with APM, and I also come from the district where they come from”.  And that is his entire campaign speech!

Dr Kabambe has not bothered to explain what he thinks of the current state of affairs in the country, how he would do better as president, and what policies he will pursue to turn the country around.  In fact, he says he is proud of the work he did on the economy while he was in the civil service. He says he engineered everything. It is not clear which part of the economy he is specifically proud of considering that the country has not really had a good economic performance for a long time. Malawi is still one of the poorest nations in the world. If Dr Kabambe were to win the DPP presidency, 2025 would surely be a disaster for the DPP.

Finance minister Mwanamveka

Hon Joseph Mwanamvekha is also rumored to be eyeing the position. He is the shadow minister of finance.  He has spent the last few months driving around the country under the pretense of listening to the people on economic matters. Just like the other two, Hon Mwanamvekha has not given a vision of how Malawi could look like under his presence.

The overriding characteristic of the three candidates is lack of charisma. The man they are trying to beat is quite charismatic and clever, if not cunning. The party would do well not to bring boys to a men’s fight.

DPP has a lot of work to do. Dr Bingu wa Mutharika swept the whole northern region in his landslide re-election. In the following years, negligence, and unfortunate statements by some leaders, helped drive many northerners away from the party. The party’s image also took a hit with the unfortunate stereotypes of nepotism and tribalism. Instead of fighting in the press and taking oxygen away from the real scandals from MCP, DPP needs to get back to the drawing board and quietly start working on these issues. The current party president promised to hold on to his position until he has rebuilt and rejuvenated the party. I believe that is a wise move. It is reckless to hold a convention now for an election that is literally 4 years away!

Given the problems Chakwera is grappling with; and given the mishaps and the incompetence of his government, opportunities for DPP to get back in government abound. To paraphrase Abban Eban, the DPP must not be a party that never misses an opportunity to miss an opportunity.

MCP is the only hope for Malawians-Chakwera

MCP is the only hope for Malawians-Chakwera

By Viciah Nassonh, MEC Stringer

Malawi Congress Party (MCP) president Dr Lazarous Chakwera has laughed off Mutharika’s earlier sentiments to transform the country into Europe describing him as a failure during his five year term in office.

Chakwera made the remarks at Lobi trading center in the area of traditional authority Kachere in Dedza district during a campaign rally he held where among others he urged people to avoid violence  during the polling day.

Chakwera said communities should not be deceived by Mutharika’s false hopes saying he has already failed to develop the country.

“Am urging you to vote for MCP, the only party that will transform your livelihood because our target are the poor Malawians. Let us together bring change by removing DPP in power come 21st May, said Chakwera”.

On tribalism, Chakwera urged people in the district to vote for him saying the MCP led government has structures to ensure that every part of the country is included in developmental activities.

He further assured people that there will be no rigging  because as MCP they are ready on the ground to make sure that the elections will be free and credible.

In his remarks party’s aspiring member of Parliament Clement Mlombwa asked Chakwera to construct good sporting activities in the area after voted into power saying the youths have passion in sports.

Mlombwa then explained that Dr Chakwera is the only hope for the youths hence the party has already included youths related structures in its manifesto.

In his campaign messages, the MCP touch bearer is emphasizing on reducing farm inputs to ensure that every farmer will be able to buy at a subsidised price.

MCP diaspora members welcomes Khumbo Kachali endorsement

Malawi Congress Party members in the diaspora have welcomed the working relationship move the party has announced with Freedom party leader and former Vice president Khumbo Kachali .

Announcing this, the spokesperson for MCP Diaspora Wing Chalo Mvula said, Khumbo Kachali is a good strategic addition to the party and the move will reinforce the party position in the north. “ As diaspora MCP members , we are happy with the endorsement our leader Dr Chakwera has got from Khumbo Kachali and the start of this working relationship- Khumbo is a well-respected politician who has a lot of influence especially in the northern region of Malawi” said Mvula.

On Sunday, MCP president Lazarus Chakwera flanked by his running mate Sidik Mia and second Vice president Harry Mkandawire addressed a press conference in Blantyre. Among other issues that included Chakwera resigning as Member of Parliament and leader of opposition, they introduced Khumbo Kachali as a working partner. As the date of the general election approaches, political parties have been busy trying to strike alliance deals “2019 elections will be won with effective strategy, and winning elections is all about the numbers and that’s why we are not surprised with all these parties trying to form alliances. We however, feel by working with Khumbo Kachali MCP has made a golden strategic move. The people of the North knows it’s only MCP that will take good care of the region as it has always been ignored by the previous regimes” Mvula said.

Khumbo Kachali is a seasoned politician who political journey saw him became a cabinet minister in late Bingu wa Mutharika’s Government. Born in 1966, he has held several cabinet positions that includes Minister of Industry, Science & Technology (2004-2006), Deputy Minister for Home Affairs & Internal Security (2006-2007) and Minister of Youth Development & Sports (2007-2008) and Minister of Health between 2008 and 2009. He eventually became the Vice president of the country under Joyce Banda but was not picked as her running mate in 2004 elections. Khumbo Kachali finally formed his own political party called Freedom Party in 2017. He has recently been known to be a critic of current vice president and UTM leader Saulos Chilima often questioning why the incumbent Vice president is not resigning from his post.

Khumbo has been known to have the eagle eye of endorsing election winners. He is on record of endorsing Bakili Muluzi in 1999, Bingu Wa Mutharika in 2004 and 2009 and with only a few days to go before 2004 elections he endorsed Peter Mutharika and all his endorsements have ended up victorious. It has also been pointed out that Joyce Banda failed to accumulate a lot of votes in Mzimba after her dropping of Khumbo as a potential running mate.

OPEN LETTERS TO THE POWERFUL: I will Start with Hon Richard Msowoya MP, Speaker of the National Assembly

Friends, Colleagues and Comrades,

In fulfilment of my rights for free speech as enshrined in the Republican Constitution and an attempt to contribute towards nation building, I have decided to be dropping Open Letters to those that hold positions of influence across sectors. The letters will enable me communicate alternative views as to influence policy and practice as well as holding leaders accountable. Today I will launch the OPEN letters with one to Rt. Hon. Richard Msowoya, Speaker of the National assembly.

Dear Mr. Speaker Sir,

Better late than none. Congratulations to you for being elected to be speaker of Parliament for th e 2014-2019 House. This was a close election. It is a rare opportunity to be given such a role to head one of the three arms of government. While politics of numbers and affiliations might have played a big role in making you a Speaker, many including myself welcomed you and hoped you would use this opportunity to help build a better Malawi. I think many can agree that you have fairly done a good job in leading deliberations as other speakers have done before. Honestly as the tenure starts nosediving ahead of the 2019 polls, your performance is an average one, lacking new innovations and energy to provide oversight especially on public expenditure. During your tenure, audit reports have indicated that some members of parliament, your own members abused Constituency Development Fund (CDF) but the public has not seen your expected drive to push th is matter to conclusion. Issues relating to illegal sale and purchase of tractors in which you are implicated were raised in Parliament too but no word came from you and Parliament has not followed this up to the end.

This letter is not set to focus on your performance as speaker of Parliament but really to look how you may improve your contributions to nation building. Recently the transformation language seems to be your food since you ditched MCP for UTM. We all respect the choice.

But I am very worried with negative signs on your character, may be your political character. In my observation, your recent actions paint a picture that you are bent to block Dr. Chakwera from becoming president not necessarily your desire to help shape a new chapter for Malawi. Bitterness is what we see as driving your political choices. This is not what we the youth would love to learn from you. The if not me then not them mentality.

I also seem to notice a dangerous trait in you about entitlement. You seem so much appear like a man who feel a entitled for the next bigger office on your ladder and do not appreciate the fact that others can as well do it. This seems what drive you to impose yourself on positions even if it has to be someone else to decide. Your fights seem to be guided by the entitlement culture of I deserve this.

To me I see in you a great father with so much wisdom and potential for roles other than being running mate or presidential candidate if you are focused. You should learn that *dzuwa salozerana ayi*. If you work hard things will always come your way.

I conclude by saying, you are a capable candidate to champion values that will build us and as young people we can always come to you and seek guidance. Not learn vengeance.

Perhaps why don’t you think of fighting for another term of office as speaker in the next parliament and deliver more before seeking next high office? You aren’t in a hurry. Are you?

TO hear from you.

Regards,

ECB

Irritate security guards invade Mia’s Blantyre offices demanding unpaid allowance

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-There was drama on Friday in Blantyre as nearly 30 people invaded former cabinet Minister Sidik Mia’s offices where they demanded money which they claimed was for services they rendered to the main opposition Malawi Congress Party (MCP) prior and during October 17 2017 by-elections.

This resulted in a commotion at Mia’s S & A Cold Storage at Makata Industrial Site in the
commercial city as they were pressing for what they claimed as “unpaid allowances” having been engaged by Mia to be part of his security detail.

The men, who were visibly angry with some coming from Ndirande, Zingwangwa and Chirimba, told this reporter that they worked for the political mungwup as bodyguards during MCP rallies in the run up to last year’s by elections.

A representative of the group Alfred Matola said they worked for three months without a single payment which is against their agreement.

Matola said efforts to receive their money had proved futile, hence they resolved to raid Mia’s offices.

When this reporter arrived at the site, Mia was having in-camera discussions with representatives of the disgruntled men.

Another man, who identified himself as Verson Masakaza said he worked as security handier.

“We worked around the clock just for the same of party officials in Ndirande and Nsanje Lalanje. And have been enquiring about our money and Mia was not forthcoming as result we thought of coming here to get our eyes,” said Masakaza.

Their leader Gilbert Mwata declined to grant this reporter an interview.

“Sitinamalize kukambirana , I can always talk to the media after finalizing the issue with Mia. I don’t want to jeopardize the discussions,” said Mwata before advising to colleagues to jump into minibus that was waiting for them outside Mia’s offices.

Mia recently expressed interest to vie for the MCP vice presidency when the party calls for a convention.

He also looks forward to be the party’s presidential running in 2019.

“The fact that I am vying for the MCP vice presidency at the MCP convention does not mean that I am vying for the running mate position. The two positions are not one and the same thing.

“Nevertheless, I will accept the honour and I will be grateful to God if I will be picked as Dr Chakwera’s running mate in 2019. But if he picks someone else, I will still render my support to the party to make sure that we liberate this country from the mess we are currently in,” said Mia a recent media briefing he held in Blantyre.

Z Allan Ntata’s Uncommon Sense: DOES IT MATTER WHO WINS IN 2019?

Uladi Mussa
Embattled Peoples Party Vice Charman Uladi Mussa:

As Uladi Mussa finally sees the folly of former President Joyce Banda’s misguided stay away from Malawi and decides to take the Malawian “pachoka mzako pali malo” slogan to new heights, and as Malawians continue to get blindly excited about 2019 elections the way football fans do at the start of new league season, it is time to provide a pause moment and ask some important guidance questions.

If you have taken some time to think about our country’s plight like I do, you are probably aware that we are now enjoying a fourth presidency of this so-called democratic dispensation that came in 1994.
