Winiko dares Chakwera Tonse administration

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-The Maravi Post readers across the country and those in diaspora have voted Bon Kalindo popularly known as Winiko as the personality of the year, 2021.

The voting process that took place from 24 December 24 to December 31, 2021 attracted numerous people’s attention who massively flocked to Maravi Post Facebook page to vote for their candidate.

According to the majority of the voters who voted for Kalindo, he won the hearts of many Malawians after leading Anti-government protests across the country demanding the leadership of the country to fulfill the campaign promises amid economic crisis that led to unbearable rise in cost of living for Malawians.

Former United Transformation Movement (UTM) National Director of youth and comedian fearlessly and courageously called out government for failing to address the socio-economic challenges that had been rocking the country.

Not long before his mass protests, the country’s leadership responded to some of his petitions such as reduction in tollgate fees to name a few.

The other nominees, Martha Chizuma and Thabo Chakaka Nyirenda also scooped a considerable number of votes after leading the war against crime across the country.

On voting, about 5,778 Maravi Post readers, followers participated in the polls that each vote was treated equally but only single vote was calculated from an individual.

Attorney General Thabo Chakaka who replaced Chikosa Silungwe was appointed about four month before the end of the year 2021 and prior to that, Nyirenda worked with Reserve Bank of Malawi (RBM) as the central bank’s legal counsel.

He has led the country in fight against illegal acts while fighting for the rights of Malawians.

On the other end, Chizuma became Malawi’s Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) director in the early months of the year 2021 after she successfully led the office Ombudsman where among several of her accomplishments, she exposed numerous illegal dealing in public office and unearthed several corrupt acts.

She was also named Anti-Corruption Champion by the United State’s Department of State after demonstrating leadership, courage, and impact in preventing, exposing and combating corruption.

Maravi Post Managing Editor Elwin Mandowa lauded the general public for participating in the voting, ” We don’t take the public participation in our daily work. Maravi Post is people’s online paper. Therefore, their paper will do more impartial and objective reporting as our core business is to serve Malawians not politicians or individuals”.

Maravipost Public service announcement: We encourage Malawians to take the Coronavirus vaccine when available

ATLANTA (MaraviPost): Many of us in Malawi are rightfully questioning whether we should trust the Vaccinations created by our Colonialists that have a checkered history of taking advantage of Malawians and other African countries.

At the inception of the Coronavirus, many were availed to the viral depiction of the late Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi presumably predicting the West creating the virus and then come up with a cure. A graphic showing Gaddafi was shared on Facebook and Twitter, with text quoting him as saying: “They will create the virus themselves and they will sell the antidotes afterwards, pretending to take their time to find the solution when they already have it.”

The fact that COVID-19 Vaccine AstraZeneca was associated with an increased overall risk of blood clotting disorders, has not helped matters especially to many in Malawi and the Africans who were inclined to be suspicious of the Colonists and others like China and the United States.

Many people have voiced concerns about how quickly the vaccines have become available, how short the testing process was, or who was tested.

While we understand the skepticism is warranted. We felt morally responsible to say the benefits of the vaccine in combating the still widespread threat of COVID-19 (which itself results in clotting problems and may be fatal) continue to outweigh the risk of side effects.

We at the Maravi Post would also like to encourage our Government to use the funds available for the Management of vaccinations to be used responsibly, the government should make the Vaccinations available to all quarters of the country.

Once again, we implore all Malawians to take the vaccinations as the consequences of not doing so will have such catastrophic consequences’

The Tenure of IG Rodney Jose ends the same way it began with controversy

Inspector General of Police (IG) Rodney Jose

When the Malawi Parliament confirmed Rodney Jose as the new Inspector General (IG) of Police services, there were calls questioning his appointment from civil society organizations (CSOs).

The questionable appointment happened as government side managed to garner the much-needed support from independent members to confirm Jose’ appointment.

Rodney Jose amassed 96 votes to have the confirmation, as 55 legislators rejected his confirmation whilst two were absent.

The confirmation came after a bruising debate on the eligibility of Jose to be the top cop as the opposition members of parliament said he was not fit.

The leading opposition Malawi Congress Party (MCP) spokesperson Maxwell Thyolera in Parliament said Jose did not deserve the position because he has Polytechnic student Robert Chasowa murder case hanging over his head.

“A commission of inquiry implicated him as one of the suspects in the death of Robert Chasowa, today Mr Jose has not been cleared of the allegations,” said Thyolera.

Thyolera also said during his time as acting IG, the ruling Democratic Progressive

Party (DPP) cadets had become more powerful that they could beat up and harass opposition members and critics of President Peter Mutharika and the government.

The lawmaker added that DPP cadets could ambush leaders of the opposition and beat up and harass journalists and critics of the government in full view of the police.

“We are going towards the election, I do not know if we will have free and fair elections with such violence against the opposition,” he wondered.

Minister of Home Affairs Cecelia Chazama said Jose was hard working and patriotic Malawian who has served in the police for 35 years.

Fast Forward to after May Elections

The leadership of Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC) has been daring Inspector General of Malawi Police Service Rodney Jose over threats he strained on anti-Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) Chairperson Dr. Jane Ansah demonstration.

The grouping has challenged IG Jose that he must desist from blatant political partisanship.

Patseni Mauka wrote the following in an opinion carried by the Maravi Post:

“In a shameless show of incompetence and arrogance, the Malawi Police Inspector General (IG) Rodney Jose has ordered Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC) to ‘forthwith’ ‘stop convening demonstrations until such a time when it would be possible to convene and hold peaceful demonstrations’. In what he must have thought was a strong letter that would make the HRDC leaders pee in their pants, the blue coloured IG gave several reasons for the decision.

In the letter which is circulating on social media Jose said, “The Malawi Police Service has recorded a worrisome number of cases of injury to persons and damage to property during demonstrations”. This is true but the blame should one hundred percent lie on the police. There are two types of injuries from the demonstrations; injuries on protesters caused by violence perpetrated by Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) cadets and injuries on DPP cadets that occurred during confrontation with Malawi Defence Force (MDF) soldiers who intervened to protect demonstrators from the cadets.

The blame should be laid on the police because the protesters suffered the injuries in full view of the police who deliberately turned a blind eye in fear of DPP cadets. This has been the trend for a long time. The Police is no longer independent. It serves DPP’s interests.”

So, it appears IG Jose was overtaken by events. He could not guarantee peaceful demos without appearing partisan. Yes, it was time for him to go as what is needed is an IG that will appear impartial during these volatile times while making sure all Malawians are safe.
