Malawi FA dates Sports Minister Gangata on permanent assistant coaches for national teams funding

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-The Football Association of Malawi (FAM) has appealed to the government, through the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture, to recruit and fund permanent assistant coaches for the country’s national football teams.

FAM President Fleetwood Haiya made the appeal on Wednesday during a meeting with the Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture Alfred Gangata, shortly after the minister assumed office.

Haiya was accompanied by FAM Second Vice President Madalitso Kuyera as the football governing body sought to brief the minister on several key issues affecting the development and management of football in the country.

During the meeting, Haiya explained that most of Malawi’s national football teams currently operate without permanently appointed assistant coaches, a situation he described as a challenge to technical stability.

He said the absence of permanent deputies in the technical panels often creates uncertainty, especially when national teams are preparing for important international assignments.

Haiya also used the meeting to update the minister on the performance and operations of all national teams that fall under the management of Football Association of Malawi.

He further raised concerns over government funding allocated to FAM for the 2025–2026 financial period, revealing that some of the promised funds have not yet been received.

According to Haiya, the funding delays have affected certain administrative and technical programmes planned by the football governing body.

Despite the challenges, Haiya assured the minister that FAM remains committed to working closely with the government to improve football standards in the country.

He emphasized that cooperation between the association and government authorities is essential for the growth and success of the sport at all levels.

In response, Gangata welcomed the engagement with FAM leadership and acknowledged the importance of strong partnerships in developing national teams.

The minister assured the association that the government is ready to provide the necessary support to Malawi’s national football teams.

Gangata added that the ministry will continue engaging relevant stakeholders to address some of the challenges affecting football administration and development.

Haiya demands MK200 million from Nyamilandu over alleged defamatory remarks

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-Football Association of Malawi (FAM) president Fleetwood Haiya has issued a legal demand against former FAM president Walter Nyamilandu, accusing him of making defamatory remarks following the association’s presidential election.

Haiya, through his lawyers Blackstone Chambers, is demanding K200 million in damages, a public apology and the removal of statements allegedly made on the Face2Face sports platform on January 5.

According to the demand letter, the remarks allegedly implied that Haiya won the FAM presidency through fraudulent means.

Haiya’s legal team argues that the statements have damaged his reputation and questioned his integrity as the head of Malawi’s football governing body.

The lawyers have given Nyamilandu seven days to comply with the demands, failing which further legal action may be taken.

The dispute follows the FAM elective general assembly held on December 16, 2023, where Haiya emerged victorious in the presidential race in Mzuzu.

Haiya defeated Nyamilandu by 23 votes to 13, bringing an end to Nyamilandu’s long tenure at the helm of the association.

Nyamilandu had served as FAM president for 19 years, making the election one of the most significant leadership transitions in Malawian football.

The legal action relates to comments allegedly made after the election, which Haiya says undermine the legitimacy of the electoral process.

The matter has attracted attention within football circles due to the senior positions previously held by both individuals.

By the time of publication, Nyamilandu had not responded to the allegations or the legal demand.

Nyamilandu served as the head of FAM for a significant period, leaving behind a legacy that encompasses both achievements and challenges.

As we discuss his legacy, we also delve into the many daunting tasks that the incoming FAM president will face. This analysis explores the impact of Nyamilandu’s leadership on Malawian football and the critical issues that the new FAM president must address.

Walter Nyamilandu’s Legacy

Walter Nyamilandu’s tenure as FAM president spanned many years, during which he implemented several significant changes and undertook numerous initiatives. One of his notable achievements was successfully leading the national football team, the Flames, to several international competitions.

He played a crucial role in enhancing the team’s performance and promoting the development of football at the grassroots level.

Furthermore, Nyamilandu’s leadership saw the introduction of youth development programs and the establishment of academies across Malawi. These initiatives aimed to identify, nurture, and groom young talent, providing opportunities for aspiring footballers. Through such efforts, he sought to strengthen the foundation of Malawian football for future generations.

Nyamilandu also prioritized infrastructure development during his tenure, working towards upgrading stadiums and facilities across the country. This investment aimed to provide better infrastructure and playing conditions for local teams and enhance the overall football experience for fans.

Challenges Faced by Nyamilandu

During his tenure, Walter Nyamilandu faced several challenges that impacted the progress of Malawian football. The lack of financial resources and limited sponsorship deals posed significant obstacles to the development of the sport. Despite his efforts to attract investors and secure funding, the financial constraints persisted, restricting the implementation of ambitious projects.

In addition, Nyamilandu had to navigate issues related to poor governance within football structures. Corruption allegations and lack of transparency plagued FAM, eroding public trust and hindering progress. These challenges posed significant hurdles for Nyamilandu as he sought to drive positive change in Malawian football.

The Daunting Task Ahead

The new FAM president, Fleetwood Haiya, assumes office at a critical juncture for Malawian football. He inherits a range of challenges that demand immediate attention and careful consideration. First and foremost, Haiya must address the financial constraints affecting FAM’s operations and investment in football development. He must explore innovative ways to secure funding, attract sponsors, and establish sustainable revenue streams.

Secondly, restoring public trust and confidence in FAM is crucial. Haiya needs to prioritize transparency and implement good governance practices that involve effective accountability mechanisms. Rebuilding relationships with stakeholders, including fans, sponsors, and the government, will be key to regaining trust and support for Malawian football.

Furthermore, the new FAM president must continue the efforts started by Nyamilandu in youth development and grassroots football.

Enhancing talent identification systems, nurturing young players, and expanding opportunities for aspiring footballers will be crucial for the future success of Malawian football.

Lastly, infrastructure development remains an ongoing challenge that requires attention. Haiya must work towards upgrading existing stadiums and facilities, ensuring they meet international standards.

Modernizing infrastructure will not only enhance the quality of football but also attract more investment and opportunities for Malawian teams on the international stage.

In conclusion, while Walter made notable strides in improving the national team’s performance, youth development, and infrastructure, financial constraints and governance issues hampered progress, Fleetwood Haiya takes the reins as the new FAM president, he faces a daunting task.

Overcoming financial limitations, rebuilding trust, and continuing the development of youth football and infrastructure will be critical for the future success of Malawian football.

With the support of stakeholders and a strong vision for the sport, the new FAM president has the opportunity to shape a brighter future for Malawian football.
