LILONGWE-(Maravipost)-The former Malawi National football team forward, Kinnah Phiri, has praised and commended the Super League of Malawi (Sulom) President, Fleetwood Haiya for a successful 2023 season.
Phiri observes that with the coming of Haiya, football lovers have witnessed huge competition in Malawi’s top league.
“Look at the fixtures in the first round, teams played a game per week for the first time in many years. Subvention was raised from MK1 million to MK10 million for the teams. Officials were on point despite some challenges.
“This proves to us that we need changes in the country’s football administration to make strides”, Kinnah said on the TNM Soccer Show on Zodiak Monday.
Kinnah Phiri is the Malawi National Team’s all-time top goal scorer with 71 goals, known by “Electric”, he also banged over 30 goals in the country’s top league in the late 1980s.
Echoing the same, former football administrator, and Analyst, Charles “The Grandmaster” Nyirenda said, the 2023 season has been a success under the leadership of Fleetwood Haiya.
“He has also announced the increment of the subvention to MK20 million next season, which is a great gesture to teams especially those who are run by individuals.
“This is evidently that if he is elected as FAM President in the forthcoming elections, he can deliver to the fullest and the sport will tremendously develop”, said Nyirenda.
Fleetwood Haiya is challenging the incumbent FAM president Walter Nyamilandu in the December 16, 2023 elections slated for Mzuzu.
The TNM Super League season in Malawi concluded on Sunday with FCB Nyasa Big Bullets FC defending the title for the fifth time in a row after playing to a 1-1 draw against Silver Strikers FC at Kamuzu Stadium in the commercial City of Blantyre.
LILONGWE-(Maravipost)-The Super League of Malawi (SULOM) President Fleetwood Haiya has declared his interest in contesting as Football Association of Malawi (FAM) President in the forthcoming electoral annual general meeting on December 16, 2023.
Haiya made the declaration at the Grand Place Hotel in Mzuzu on Sunday, December 5, 2023, during the press conference.
He said the decision has been made after a careful examination of all relevant factors and accepted the call from affiliates and Malawians with goodwill to serve as their FAM President, with a desire to offer the sport a renewed hope, vision, and purpose.
“I seek to bring dedicated, transparent, inclusive, competent, and people-centered leadership to develop, sustain and safeguard the future of our game. You will all agree with me that a collective duty to re-orient the state of our football into a strong and competitive footballing nation requires an accomplished football acumen and drive that place the interest of our game over and beyond personal interests and gains”,
“To our distinguished FAM affiliates, you are holding the fate of our game in your hands. You have a critical mandate to promote and protect the future of our football for generations to come from 16th December 2023 and beyond”, Haiya said.
He further said that he will soon share a blueprint that will propel an agenda for the joint efforts to take football to the next level.
He then appealed to all concerned parties to maintain unity of purpose, decency, and respect for each other for the game of football to develop.
Beach Soccer of Malawi and the Northern Region Football Association (NRFA) have already nominated Haiya making him a legitimate candidate for the post.
Meanwhile, the incumbent FA President Walter Nyamilandu is yet to disclose his position.
BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-The Football Association of Malawi (FAM) executive committee elections are finally here as nominations for potential candidates rolled out this week.
Mark your calendars. The D-day will be on 16th December, 2023 and Mzuzu, the host, a likely theatre of hopelessness for the losers and ecstasy for the victors.
Much and more is at stake. This is the battle for the soul of the game—one that has become more like a religion at home and around the world.
The focus, however, like always, will be on FAM presidency, a position the incumbent Walter McMillan Nyamilandu Manda has clung on to since 2004.
It’s been a long way gone; 20 years is not yesterday.
Nyamilandu, just as he owns many names, has over the years been wearing many faces; a moderately successful footballer, Mighty Wanderers general secretary, a church deacon and a marketer, a shrewd one, to say the least.
It is this shrewdness that has obviously sustained him at the helm of football as he has always found a way—dirty and smart—to persuade affiliates to rally behind him.
Of course he has scored some administrative goals over the years. The FIFA funded projects such as Mpira House, the seat of FAM, are among the standouts.
However, one thing is clear though: our football hasn’t really developed to the expected professional levels. Since 1988 when Malawi won the East and Central Africa challenge Cup, the Flames remain in the wilderness of failure with no silverware to its name.
This is despite the fact that every country’s football greatness is measured by the national team’s success. It is that success that opens up markets for players in top leagues.
Nigeria, Morroco, Cameroon and Senegal are all living examples as their people are all over top footballing leagues.
It is less surprising though that the only meaningful destination for Malawian players, is South Africa, more so in little known teams.
But this country can do better.
What local football needs now are new ideas, new philosophy and new blood.
All former Nyamilandu rivals such as Willy Yabwanya, James Mwenda, Wilkins Mijiga have all seemingly disappeared into oblivion.
It leaves the stage to a potential fight between Nyamilandu and the current Super League of Malawi (Sulom) president Fleetwood Haiya.
Nothing has been completed yet to confirm the clash as nominations are still flying but there’s a 99.9 percent possibility if the aura of air sweeping through the soccer gossip corners are anything to go by.
Haiya has changed Sulom in a blink of an eye. That sleepy organisation has woken up from its deep slumber.
The long standing reforms that were merely campaign promises in the past have become a reality.
A vibrant secretariat is in full swing and there is utmost orderliness in the way of doing business.
So, Haiya, who also had a successful stint at Nyasa Big Bullets as chief executive officer and later vice chairman has proved that he hides a shrewd acumen that can transform local football given the mantle of power.
His Bullets days were a marvel. He took over a thoroughly disorganised and hopeless team and transformed it into a forceful side.
The People’s Team has won everything domestically; the league titles, Carlsberg Cup, Airtel Top Eight, FDH Cup and more during his association with it.
The ideas he helped to sharpen Bullets into such a force, can easily be transitioned into the national team and, effectively, bear unimaginable fruits.
He is surely credibly tailor-made for the FAM top job.

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-The newly elected President of Super League of Malawi (SULOM), Fleetwood Haiya, is living up to his promises. On Thursday, May 25, 2023, he disbursed MK32 million to the 16 elite league teams as the second installment of their MK7 million subvention.
During his campaign, Haiya pledged to provide each team in the elite league with MK7 million as a subvention, and he has now delivered on that promise.
The allocated funds are intended to support the top-flight clubs in covering their secretariat and operational costs.
This subvention comes as a much-needed relief for the struggling rookies, Extreme FC from Mchinji.
The team has been facing challenges both on the pitch and financially.
This weekend, Extreme FC will be on the road to Dwangwa, Nkhotakota, where they will face MAFCO FC in a TNM Superleague fixture.
Kondwani Kayira, the General Secretary of the club, described the subvention as timely, stating that they were previously uncertain about how they would finance the trip to Nkhotakota and pay off their existing debts.
Extreme FC currently finds itself at the bottom of the TNM Super League table, with only 2 points from the 6 games they have played so far.
LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-The affiliates who gathered at the Sunbird Nkopola Hotel in Mangochi on Saturday, February 25, 2023 have voted out Tiya Somba Banda as Super League of Malawi (SULOM) president.
Instead, SULOM members gave the throne to the former vice President of Nyasa Big Bullets FC Fleetwood Haiya.
Haiya won the elections with 30 votes against 18 of Tiya Somba Banda.
In his acceptance remarks, Haiya said, the clubs demonstrated their power towards the Revival, Reform and Rebrand of the Superleague in Malawi.
“Let me say that, there is no winner and no loser in this election, everyone is a winner on his own as all have one goal which is to develop the Superleague”.
“Let me thank my predecessor for the love of the sport that he demonstrated both during his reigning and campaign periods. He laid a foundation upon which we will continue to build the league to greater heights”,
“Let me urge my fellow office bearers to unite, step up our efforts to make our league one of the best ever. Like I said, we have a task to do and football lovers in the country will judge us not for anything else but on the performance during our tenure”, Said Haiya.
He added, his leadership will not go to fail the people who have entrusted him with the seat.
Haiya hailed Crowe Chartered Accountants for the efficient and professional way in which they have handled the elections.

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)—One of Malawi’s renown football team, Big Bullets, popularly known the Peoples Team, has lost its K500 million (about $728 000) sponsorship deal with a cigarette manufacturing company Nyasa Manufacturing Company (NMC)
The NMC had committed itself to sponsor the team for five years, however due to a spate of never-ending internal squabbles within the team’s executive committee, left the sponsor with no other option but to withdraw its funds from the Big Bullets team.
Announcing the bad news to Malawi football fans on Monday, the sponsors told journalists at a news conference that they are suspending their sponsorship deal following the confusion in the Big Bullets.
Recent upheavals have caused mass resignations members of the board of Trustees.
The first to resign was board chairperson James Busile who was followed by Gregory Madeya before the others, including vice-chairperson Fred Kwacha, secretary Jim Kalua, the club’s finance and administration chairperson Fleetwood Haiya, who is NMC finance director, also followed suit.
“We have decided that our sponsorship should be suspended,” Nyasa boss Konrad Buckle told the news conference.
The development comes at a time Big Bullets traditional rivals, Mighty Be Forward Wanderers are enjoying financial support from Japanese car dealer, Be Forward.
Big Bullets, who command the biggest fan base in Malawi, had been without sponsorship for nine years since former president Bakili Muluzi sponsored them for two years; and then Nyasa rescued them…
Most of the 16 football teams in Malawi’s Super League are struggling financially.
