When fixtures lose stability, the league loses credibility

The release of the 2026/27 FDH Premiership fixtures by the Super League of Malawi has, as expected, sparked excitement among football fans across the country.

Fixtures are more than just dates they set the tone for the season, shaping expectations, rivalries and the overall rhythm of the league.

But this time, alongside the excitement, there is a growing sense of concern.

At the heart of that concern is a simple but critical question, will these fixtures be respected?

Malawian football has, in recent seasons, struggled with consistency when it comes to honoring scheduled matches.

What is released on paper has not always translated into what happens on the pitch.

Last season, several fixtures were shifted at short notice, often at the request of clubs citing travel commitments.

While such requests may appear reasonable on the surface, the manner in which they were handled raised eyebrows.

Some teams appeared to benefit from convenient rescheduling that allowed them to play multiple matches within the same travel window.

In elite football, that kind of flexibility is not just unusual it is problematic.

Fixtures are supposed to provide a level playing field.

When changes are made too easily or without strict criteria, the integrity of the competition is put at risk.

This brings us to a deeper concern the potential for such practices to indirectly encourage match manipulation.

While there may be no direct evidence of wrongdoing, irregular fixture adjustments can create an environment where fairness is questioned. And in football, perception can be just as damaging as reality.

The responsibility for addressing this issue lies squarely with the Super League of Malawi. If past disruptions were indeed mistakes, then accountability is needed.

Fans and stakeholders deserve transparency and a clear commitment that such inconsistencies will not be repeated.

A professional league must operate on firm principles. Clubs plan their seasons based on fixtures training schedules, travel arrangements and financial budgets all depend on a stable calendar.

Constant changes not only disrupt teams but also undermine the credibility of the league itself.

Another major issue emerging from the newly released fixtures is the question of venues.

The fixture list includes designated stadiums for matches, giving an impression of preparedness and organization. However, that impression may be misleading.

The Football Association of Malawi, through its club licensing system, has not yet approved some of the venues listed.

This creates a dangerous disconnect between planning and regulation.

For clubs, this uncertainty carries serious consequences. Teams may already be budgeting and organizing logistics based on these venues.

If inspections later disqualify certain stadiums, clubs will be forced into last minute adjustments that could strain their finances and disrupt their preparations.

This situation calls for urgent action from the Football Association of Malawi.

Stadium inspections must be conducted swiftly and decisively to provide clarity before the season begins. Delays will only compound the problem.

At the same time, the Super League of Malawi must ensure that its fixture planning aligns with officially approved venues.

Coordination between the two bodies is not optional it is essential for the smooth running of the league.

Ultimately, Malawian football stands at a crucial point. The passion of the fans and the potential of the players are not in doubt.

What is needed now is administrative discipline.

If fixtures are to mean anything, they must be respected, protected and executed with integrity throughout the season.

SULOM pushes for FIFA+ TV reforms as teams demand fair revenue share

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-Super League of Malawi (SULOM) has revealed that senior officials from FIFA Plus TV are expected to visit Malawi before kicks off of 2026/27 to appreciate local football and review areas that require improvement in the broadcasting arrangement.

The move is aimed at ensuring that Super League teams begin to earn meaningful revenue from the airing of their matches on FIFA+, a platform that has been streaming local games over the three past seasons.

This development was disclosed during SULOM’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) held in Salima over the weekend, where football stakeholders gathered to assess the state of the game and map the way forward.

SULOM President Gilbert Mitawa admitted that there have been several challenges that have prevented teams from benefiting significantly from the current deal.

Mitawa explained that the three year agreement signed in the past was not favourable to the clubs, resulting in minimal financial returns despite the exposure offered by the global platform.

According to him, the agreement was signed under the previous leadership of Football Association of Malawi (FAM) and its structure did not adequately safeguard the financial interests of local teams.

However, Mitawa expressed optimism that things will change soon, saying there is strong hope that clubs will start generating tangible profits beginning with the 2026/27 season.

Backing the call for reform, FAM President Fleetwood Haiya stressed the importance of reviewing the contract before the new season kicks off.

Haiya said FAM’s expectation is clear the partnership must translate into financial growth for the clubs, not just visibility on an international stage.

The matter was strongly raised by FCB Nyasa Big Bullets during the AGM, highlighting growing frustration among top flight teams.

FCB Nyasa Big Bullets Chief Executive Officer Albert Chigoga openly expressed dissatisfaction with the revenue clubs are currently receiving from the FIFA+ broadcasts.

SULOM postpones Ekhaya FC VS Mighty Wanderers

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-The Super League of Malawi (SULOM) has postponed the highly anticipated fixture between Ekhaya FC and Mighty Wanderers that was initially scheduled for Thursday, October 16, 2025, at Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre.

The development follows a formal request from Mighty Wanderers, who appealed for the postponement citing player fatigue.

Three of their key players were part of the Malawi National Football Team (the Flames) that traveled to Tunisia for an international assignment and have not had adequate rest since returning.

Adding to the challenge, the Nomads are set to play in the semifinals of the FDH Bank Cup this coming Sunday against Creck Sporting Club at Aubrey Dimba Stadium in Mchinji, another high stakes encounter that requires full squad fitness and preparation.

SULOM’s Vice General Secretary, Donnex Chilonga, confirmed the development, saying the league governing body had considered the reasons presented by the Blantyre giants before granting the postponement.

“Yes, the game involving Mighty Wanderers and Ekhaya FC will not take place as earlier scheduled. We have looked into the concerns raised by Wanderers regarding player rest and fixture congestion and we have decided to move the game to a later date,” said Chilonga.

He further clarified that all other Super League fixtures set for Wednesday and Thursday this week will go ahead as planned.

The rescheduling of the Wanderers–Ekhaya fixture is expected to be announced soon after consultations with all stakeholders, including broadcasters and match officials.

Football Ibrahim Phiri have since applauded SULOM’s decision, noting that fixture congestion has been a long-standing challenge in Malawian football, especially for top clubs involved in multiple competitions.

Meanwhile football analyst Charles Nyerende said it is surprising that SULOM is rushing against time to finish the league by December, yet the season is supposed to end in February 2026 according to the FAM calendar.

Wanderers are in second place in the Super League after playing 18 games, with 42 points, and are the only team so far that has not tasted defeat.

“This proves to us that we need changes in the country’s football administration to make strides”, Kinnah said on the TNM Soccer Show on Zodiak Monday.

Kinnah Phiri is the Malawi National Team’s all-time top goal scorer with 71 goals, known by “Electric”, he also banged over 30 goals in the country’s top league in the late 1980s.

Echoing the same, former football administrator, and Analyst, Charles “The Grandmaster” Nyirenda said, the 2023 season has been a success under the leadership of Fleetwood Haiya.

“He has also announced the increment of the subvention to MK20 million next season, which is a great gesture to teams especially those who are run by individuals.

“This is evidently that if he is elected as FAM President in the forthcoming elections, he can deliver to the fullest and the sport will tremendously develop”, said Nyirenda.

Fleetwood Haiya is challenging the incumbent FAM president Walter Nyamilandu in the December 16, 2023 elections slated for Mzuzu.

The TNM Super League season in Malawi concluded on Sunday with FCB Nyasa Big Bullets FC defending the title for the fifth time in a row after playing to a 1-1 draw against Silver Strikers FC at Kamuzu Stadium in the commercial City of Blantyre.

By Edwin Mbewe

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-Fleetwood Haiya, President of the Superleague of Malawi (SULOM), has urged companies and well-wishers to invest in Superleague teams to foster the development of football in the country.

Haiya made the remarks on November 20, 2023, Monday at Riverside Hotel in Lilongwe during the unveiling ceremony of Jersey sponsorship and replica for Karonga United FC.

He stated, “The partnership should bring business to the company as their services will be marketed through Karonga United hence let me ask Infraworks to make good use of this opportunity”.

Haiya stressed the urgency of fostering a robust commercialization drive within Malawi’s football landscape.

“Running Super League league teams is a challenge in the country hence coming in of sponsors to the teams eases pressure from the officials. I believe that what the chairman of Karonga Alufeyo Chipanga has promised will be fulfilled.

“Let discipline be Paramount within the club so that you refrain from tarnishing the image of the sponsors”, Haiya added.

Haiya personally procured the new kit at MK1 million, while Minister of Local Government Richard Chimwendo Banda bought it at MK1.5 million.

SULOM clarifies fixture congestion

By Linda Kwanjana

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-Super League of Malawi (SULOM) says despite the congestion on the football fixtures for the elite league in the 2023 soccer season, mechanisms are in place to ensure that the league finishes in time, on the same day, and without occasioning any negative externalities.

SULOM made these sentiments during a press briefing chaired by Vice President Colonel Gilbert Mitawa, where they emphasized that due to the adoption of one game per week policy, has made the 2023 Super League season highly competitive and exciting as the policy has been a key driving force towards Reviving, Reforming and Rebranding the elite league.

“Let me, however, admit that implementation of this policy has not been an easy task. The main challenge has been fixture congestion due to several factors. Firstly, several stadiums were closed for maintenance and failure to meet licencing infrastructure requirements.

“This forced SULOM to reschedule some matches against the provisional season fixture that had been released at the beginning of the season,” reads part of the statement.

They also mentioned some other factors National team engagements and unplanned prolonged camping of the national team together with the introduction of CASTEL CUP including the participation of Nyasa Big Bullets in the CAF Champions League.

“SULOM understands the negative impact of fixture congestion on Clubs, players, and the league as a whole. Fixture congestion undermines efforts to professionalize the game but most importantly, affects the welfare of players due to risk of fatigue, burnout, and undesirable injuries,” the statement adds.

On the other part, SULOM highlighted that this situation is not seen only in Malawi football as Europe and South Africa’s elite leagues were also affected by the Qatar World Cup and CAF competitions respectively.

However, SULOM assures its affiliates and all football-loving Malawians that it is taking measures to mitigate the impact of congestion for the remaining 2023 fixtures, among others there is an introduction of mid-week games especially for teams that have fewer games than others.

The body also admitted that they are engaging their mother body FAM to allocate Mid-week cup games to mitigate the impact of fixture congestion and player burnout.

Furthermore, SULOM expects that the National team will not have extended camping periods as has been the case in the past.

Fleetwood Haiya walking the talk: Sulom disburses MK32m supporting elite league teams

By Edwin Mbewe

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-The newly elected President of Super League of Malawi (SULOM), Fleetwood Haiya, is living up to his promises. On Thursday, May 25, 2023, he disbursed MK32 million to the 16 elite league teams as the second installment of their MK7 million subvention.

During his campaign, Haiya pledged to provide each team in the elite league with MK7 million as a subvention, and he has now delivered on that promise.

The allocated funds are intended to support the top-flight clubs in covering their secretariat and operational costs.

This subvention comes as a much-needed relief for the struggling rookies, Extreme FC from Mchinji.

The team has been facing challenges both on the pitch and financially.

This weekend, Extreme FC will be on the road to Dwangwa, Nkhotakota, where they will face MAFCO FC in a TNM Superleague fixture.

Kondwani Kayira, the General Secretary of the club, described the subvention as timely, stating that they were previously uncertain about how they would finance the trip to Nkhotakota and pay off their existing debts.

Extreme FC currently finds itself at the bottom of the TNM Super League table, with only 2 points from the 6 games they have played so far.
