Karonga United accept compromise deal, set for Wanderers clash in Blantyre

1 Min Read

KARONGA-(MaraviPost)-Karonga United have agreed to travel to Blantyre to face Mighty Wanderers after reaching a compromise with Super League of Malawi (SULOM) over financial compensation linked to the abandoned FDH Premiership opener.

The decision ends days of uncertainty in which the Northern Region side had threatened to boycott their fixtures unless their financial demands were addressed.

The club had initially insisted on being reimbursed MK26 million, claiming this was the total cost incurred in preparation for the cancelled opening match of the season.

That match, scheduled for 25 April, was called off following administrative disagreements involving Super League of Malawi (SULOM) and the Football Association of Malawi (FAM) over the certification status of Kamuzu Stadium.

Due to the cancellation, both Karonga United and Mighty Wanderers were each awarded MK3.5 million as partial compensation, a figure Karonga considered far below their actual losses.

After several rounds of engagement with league authorities, Karonga United management has now softened its stance and accepted a phased payment arrangement.

Club secretary general Ramsey Simwaka confirmed that the team will honour the fixture against Mighty Wanderers at Chiwembe Stadium in Blantyre.

Simwaka said SULOM has committed to paying an additional portion of the claimed funds, with the remaining balance expected to be settled in stages.

He added that the club decided to prioritise continuity of the league and the welfare of players rather than prolonging the dispute.

The development has been welcomed as a step towards reducing tensions that had threatened to overshadow the early weeks of the FDH Premiership season.
