2 Min Read

Cape Town’s street art transforms everyday streets into bold, playful backdrops, splashing the city with colour and personality. From Woodstock’s vibrant walls to Salt River’s edgy murals and the colourful stretch of the Sea Point Promenade, creativity pops up around every corner.

These are some of the most Instagrammable street art spots in the Mother City:

Mandela Mural, Gardens

Mak1one’s striking blue mural showcases Nelson Mandela’s portrait alongside his iconic quote: “The greatest glory in living lies not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall.” Its commanding presence and resonant message captivate instantly.

Location: 66 Nelson Street, District Six

Waves of Pride, Sea Point Promenade

Along the Sea Point Promenade, Celine Ndzana’s Waves of Pride adds a burst of creativity to the coastline. Flowing bands of colour echo the nearby ocean, symbolising unity, diversity, and the strength of Cape Town’s LGBTQ+ community. With the sea steps away and a fresh coastal breeze in the air, it is an easy spot to pause, take it all in, and snap a few photos.

The Man with Dreadlocks, Salt River

Salt River is one of those neighbourhoods where art appears on almost every corner, but The Man with Dreadlocks stands out. This mural has a quiet intensity, with intricate detail that draws you in. What makes the area even more special is its accessibility. The murals in Salt River include Braille plaques and QR codes, making it easier for blind and partially sighted visitors to experience them.

Castle Made of Sand, Gardens

This striking street artwork by Marti Macfly highlights the fragility of South Africa’s West Coast coastline, drawing attention to the need for greater environmental awareness and conservation.

The Aviator Dog, Cape Town City Centre

One of the city’s largest murals, The Aviator Dog, was created for the International Public Art Festival in 2019. This street art was painted by Belgian street artist Bart Smeets in collaboration with Baz Art. Its scale alone makes it worth seeing, and it is a great example of how global artists have contributed to Cape Town’s street art scene.
