Lilongwe man hangs himself over fiancee’ fight with sex worker

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-A man in Lilongwe has hanged himself to toilet roof after his fiancée and a commercial sex worker he brought home engaged in a brawl over him.

The Deputy Public Relations Officer of Lilongwe Police Station, Foster Benjamin, said the deceased, Stewart Banda, was found dead on Wednesday following a scandal the previous day involving him, the fiancée and a sex worker.

Prior to the tragic incident, Banda went on a drinking spree and ended up hooking a prostitute at Chigwirizano Township before taking her to his parents’ home.

Unfortunately, his fiancée got the wind of the whole issue and immediately rushed to the house and a fight erupted between the two ladies.

Banda fled from the scene and sought refuge at his friend’s house before he returned back to his parents’ house on Wednesday.

On the morning of Wednesday, Banda’s father discovered his lifeless body hanging from the roof of the toilet before he alerted Chinsapo Police Unit.

Detective arrived at the scene and took Banda’s body to Kamuzu Central Hospital for postmortem.

Results indicated that death was due to suffocation due to strangulation. Banda hailed from Nkhwangwa village, Lilongwe.

Lilongwe man dies of excessive beer drinking

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-A brewery worker in Lilongwe has died after heavily drinking beer which he had stolen in the absence of his boss.

Deputy public relations officer for Lilongwe Foster Benjamin identified the deceased as Amin John, aged 27, met his fate on Wednesday, March 23, 2022 soon after taking the brew at his workplace in Chitipi.

“He was first assigned to clean the bottles since there was no production due to electricity blackout in the process, John’s boss went out, prompting him and colleagues to steal some bottles.

“He guzzled the beers until he started vomiting and opening bowels Immediately, John was rushed to Kamuzu Central Hospital where he died while receiving treatment” , Benjamin said.

He added that postmortem results indicated that he had died from alcoholic binge drinking.

The late John came from Kapyepye Village, Traditional Authority (T.A) Lundu in Blantyre.

Malawi police in Lilongwe arrest two hardcore street kids

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-The Malawi Police in Lilongwe are keeping in custody two street kids suspected of terrorizing motorists at Lilongwe Bridge.

The Saturday night arrest follows an October 11, 2021 report in which the suspects, aged 15 and 16, pelted stones at a passing Double Cabin registration number BK 2847.

Lilongwe Police station deputy police publicist Foster Benjamin told the Maravi Post that street connected children, along with their counterparts who are at large, ambushed the vehicle at about 23:00 hours.

“They stoned it, damaging windscreen in the process. A police manhunt led to the arrest of the minors on Saturday night, October 23, 2021. The duo faces a malicious damage charge and they will appear in court soon,” says Benjamin.

Meanwhile, police have intensified patrols along the bridge.

Malawian man arrested for injuring wife’s private parts

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-The Malawi Police in Lilongwe are keeping in custody a 24-year old man suspected of seriously injuring his wife’s private parts with a sharp object.

According to Lilongwe Police station deputy publicist Foster Benjamin the suspect identified as Yohane Jailosi committed the offence on Tuesday at Salamba Village T/A Khongoni.

“The 19-year old victim (name withheld), while with her one-and-a-half year old child, followed the suspect to the garden. Displeased, the husband asked her to return home, accusing her of infidelity.

“The couple immediately engaged in a heated argument which ended up into a fight.The husband heavily assaulted the wife, leaving her unconscious. He went on and produced an unidentified sharp object and stabbed her on her private parts,” said Benjamin.

The police publicist added, ” Villagers, alerted by the cry of the child, came and found the victim unconscious and in a pool of blood. They rushed her to Kasiya Police Post before being referred to Kasiya Health Centre for treatment”.

The suspect Jailosi hails from Msukuma Village in Traditional Authority (T/A) Kabudula in Lilongwe.

Meanwhile, Jailosi is expected to appear in court soon to answer charges ranging from unlawful wounding to acts intended to cause grievous harm.

Malawi court jails man to six years for hacking wife over sex denial

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-The Lilongwe Chief Resident Magistrate’s Court on Monday, May 24, 2021 sentenced a man to 6 years in prison after he stabbed his wife for denying him sex on grounds that she had just given birth.

The convict, Dzongwe Evance, was found guilty on Monday May 24 2021 on a charge of acts intended to cause grievous harm.

The offence is contrary to Section 235 (a) of the Penal code.

According to Lilongwe police deputy publicist Foster Benjamin the court heard that the convict Evance committed the crime on March 8 2021 at Njirayamalimba Village in Traditional Authority Masumbankhunda.

Benjamin said the convict demanded sex from his wife who had a newly born baby.

“The wife denied him his conjugal rights, attracting his anger which culminated into her severe beatings.The court learnt that Evance went on stabbing his wife on her neck until she became unconscious. He was later arrested and taken to court where he pleaded not guilty.

“Four witnesses were thrown against him and he was found guilty as earlier charged. Inspector Bottoman asked for a harshest sentence, arguing Evance had acted inhumanely. In his mitigation, Evance pleaded with the court to forgive him so that he could go back home and look after his newly born child,” added police publicist

Benjamin added, “Passing judgement, Chief Resident Magistrate Patrick Chirwa quashed Evance’s mitigation and instead condemned his beastly character. He went on to order him to spend the next six years behind bars to warn others”.

The convict Evance aged 27, comes from Pokonkhewa Village, T.A Authority Masumbankhunda in Lilongwe District.

Malawian man fined MK100,000 for posting ex-girlfriend’s nude photos on Facebook


LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-The Lilongwe Senior Resident Magistrate’s Court this week sentenced 31-year-old James Rashid Alick to pay a fine of MK100, 000 or in default serve 10 months in prison after he posted on Facebook nude photos and videos of his ex-girlfriend.

According to Foster Benjamin, Deputy Public Relations Officer for Lilongwe Police Station the convict Rashid was found guilty on his own plea on Friday.

“The court heard through State Prosecutor Sergeant Peter Sulani that the convict was in a love affair with a 27-year-old lady but the woman terminated the relationship. She headed to South Africa to seek green pastures, leaving behind Rashid Alick bitter.

“The court further learnt that Rashid Alick created a Facebook account and uploaded nude photos and videos of his ex-girlfriend. This prompted the victim to return back to Malawi and lodged a complaint against Rashid Alick, leading to his arrest,” says Benjamin.

The police publicist added, “In court, he admitted to using electronic communication to disturb the right of privacy of another person. The offence contravenes Section 87 of Electronic Transactions and Cyber Security Act Number 33 of 2016.

Rashid Alick asked the court to exercise leniency on him saying he was a family man struggling to make ends meet out of his secondhand clothes business. However, Sergeant Sulani prayed for a harsh penalty, arguing the victim nearly killed herself following Rashid Alick’s actions”.

Senior Resident Magistrate Wanangwa Nyirenda bought into the state submission and condemned Rashid Alick for exposing the victim’s private life.

He went on to slap him with a MK100, 000 fine or 10 month jail term as a measure of deterrence.

Rashid Alick has since paid the fine to escape the jail time.

He comes from Kambalame Village, Traditional Authority (T.A) Jalasi in Mangochi District.

Police hunt for brutal killers in Chikwawa

The Malawi Police in the Lower-shire district of Chikwawa are hunting for thugs who killed and removed some body parts of an 21-year old man.

The thugs, between the  night of  27 and 28 November, strangled to  death Tomasi Matenda in his house in Chikwawa’s East Bank area.

According to the district’s police publicist, Foster Benjamin, it is further suspected that the assailants dragged the deceased outside where they chopped and peeled off his private parts and flesh of the right leg.

Matenda was dumped at the nearby Livuzu Bridge where he was discovered dead on Wednesday morning.

Police and medical personnel from Maperera Health Centre established that Matenda had died of strangulation.

The motive of his killing is unclear as police investigation is still  underway.

Matenda came from Malata Village  in the area of Traditional Authority Makhwira in Chikwawa District.

Police in Chikwawa have taken into custody a former employee of Afrisian Enterprise Limited for fleecing the company of over 7 million Kwacha.

Spokesperson of Chikwawa Police, Foster Benjamin, confirmed this in an interview with Maravi Post and identified the suspect as Steven Makunganya.

According to Benjamin, Makunganya is suspected to have swindled his former employ 7, 350,000 Kwacha in May.

He said management at Afrisian Enterprise reported the matter to police where they instituted an investigation on the matter.

“Between 12 and 13 May, the suspect, who was a field supervisor, was allegedly issued with K10 million to be distributed to markets for purchasing farm produce, however on the following day, Makunganya bolted with the money,” Benjamin said.

The Chikwawa Police Spokeperson said at the time they arrested Makunganya, he was found with a vehicle, registration number BLK 6987, cash amounting to162,000 Kwacha and a newly acquired passport bearing his name.

“At the time we arrested the suspect we found him with a vehcle, some cash and a newly acquired paasport bearing his name, meanwhile we have seized all the items and Steven Makunganya is in police custody at Nchalo,” He said.

He is expected to appear in court soon to answer the offence of theft by and investigations are still underway to recover more items.

The Magistrate’s Court in Chikwawa has handed a 31-year-old woman 12 months imprisonment with hard labour for dumping her newly born baby into a toilet.

Spokesperson of Chikwawa Police, Foster Benjamin, has confirmed the development saying the woman was found guilty on Thursday in a case she stood accused of abandoning her child at birth.

According to Benjamin the offence the woman was answering contravenes section 232 of the Penal code.

Police Prosecutor Inspector Helix Kamkweche stated in court that Joseph, on 31 May, at Migano Village under Traditional Authority Katunga in the district, conceived a baby boy and later dumped him in a pit latrine.

“When a neighbour, Kinwasi Patrick, visited the toilet for a natural call, he heard a baby crying from the latrine.

“With the help of other villagers, he managed to rescue the child before informing members of the community policing who apprehended the suspected mother and brought her to the police,” explained Kamkweche.

During her trial, the woman admitted the charge, saying she didn’t know that she had delivered and further argued that the baby had accidentally slipped into the toilet at a time she was answering a call of nature.

In his submission, Prosecutor Kamkweche asked the court to impose a harsh sentence on the accused, saying she had acted irresponsibly and inhumane as the life of an innocent child could have been lost.

Passing sentence, First Grade Magistrate Gladstone Chirundu shared the state’s argument and observed that such cases were on the rise in the hence ordering the 12 months sentence

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)- The Malawi police at Lingadzi station in the capital Lilongwe, are hunting for unknown assailants, who shot dead a thirty-year-old man.

Lingadzi police publicist Foster Benjamin, identified the deceased as Madaliso Masenjere, who was found fatally wounded on Saturday evening. This was at Area 47 Sector 2, behind the late former Inspector General of Police, Lunguzi’s residence.

Benjamin said the late Masenjere, is said to have sustained four gunshot wounds. The gunshots were heard outside the house of Kennedy Lunguzi, who later alerted the guard on duty.

The police publicist added that the guard further alerted a rapid response team, which rushed to the scene before reporting the incident to the police at Lingadzi station.

“Police found the deceased lying in a pool of blood, with his bicycle beside him. The police further recovered an empty cartridge of a pistol at the scene.

“The deceased was taken to Kamuzu Central Hospital for an autopsy.  Police are  investigating to establish the motive behind the murder,” said Benjamin.

The deceased hailed from Salijeni Village, Traditional Authority (T.A.) Nsabwe in Thyolo district.
