The initiative was championed by Malawi First Lady, Gertrude Mutharika who commended NBS Bank and NICO Group for partnering with BEAM Trust for the donations.
“I want to thank NBS Bank and NICO Group for the support they have provided to us, you have shown that you really care for people. I would like to appeal to other organisations and individuals to emulate what these two have done today,” said Mutharika.
Some of the notable items in the hamper include :10Kgs of maize flour, 5Kgs Rice, 2L cooking oil, bathing soap, washing soap, Sugar, Salt, Matches, soya pieces, and 2L Sobo.
NBS Bank Borad Chairman who is also NICO Group managing Director Vizenge Kumwenda said the initiative by the First Lady reflects their commitment to uplifting the communities where NBS Bank and the NICO Group operate.
“At NBS Bank, we believe true progress happens when we stand together with our people by responding to their needs with compassion, dedication, and care. Because at the heart of everything we do, We Care A Little More,” said Kumwenda.
MANGOCHI-(MaraviPost)-Gertrude Mutharika, former First Lady and wife of Malawi’s ex-leader, has called on citizens to cast their votes based on principles in the forthcoming elections.
She emphasized the importance of evaluating candidates’ policies, track records, and integrity rather than relying solely on party loyalty or personal affiliations.
The former First Lady made these remarks during a political gathering organized by Overton Imedi, the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) representative for the northern constituency in Mangochi.
The meeting brought together local community members in Mtuwa village to engage with party leaders and hear from prominent figures like Mrs. Mutharika.
Her speech was received with enthusiasm, as she stressed that informed voting is crucial for ensuring accountable leadership and sustainable development in the region.
Gertrude Mutharika’s appeal underscores a broader call for citizens to actively participate in the democratic process and hold elected officials to high standards.
Her political influence in Mangochi is notable, as she has historically been a unifying figure for DPP supporters, especially in the northern districts where her advocacy and community engagements have often swayed local opinion.
The DPP’s current strategy in Mangochi appears focused on consolidating these loyalist bases while also appealing to undecided voters by emphasizing principled leadership and continuity of development programs.
By leveraging Mrs. Mutharika’s reputation and visibility, the party aims to strengthen grassroots mobilization, particularly in rural villages where personal connections and direct engagement remain critical for electoral success.
In Mangochi, political competition is intense, with several high-profile figures vying for influence.
Opposition leaders, including members of the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) and independent candidates, have cultivated their own local networks, focusing on development promises and youth engagement.
Despite these challenges, Gertrude Mutharika’s longstanding presence and symbolic authority as a former First Lady provide her with a unique advantage in rallying traditional and community leaders in favor of the DPP.
Her ability to mobilize women’s groups and rural communities contrasts with some rivals whose appeal is more limited to urban or partisan constituencies.
This dynamic has made Mangochi a key battleground, where voter persuasion can hinge on personal credibility, historical loyalty, and direct engagement — areas where Mrs. Mutharika has repeatedly demonstrated influence.
The outcome of the political contest in Mangochi could serve as a bellwether for the DPP’s broader performance nationally.
A strong showing in the district would reinforce the party’s narrative of enduring grassroots support, boosting morale and momentum in other contested regions.
Conversely, failure to secure Mangochi convincingly may signal vulnerabilities in the DPP’s northern strongholds, prompting strategic recalibrations ahead of the general elections.
Political analysts note that districts like Mangochi, where personal influence and community engagement are decisive, can disproportionately shape perceptions of a party’s national strength and organizational reach.
Concluding Analysis
Mrs. Mutharika’s message highlights a strategic shift in political engagement, focusing on principles and informed choice rather than mere loyalty to party structures.
Her involvement reinforces the DPP’s efforts to consolidate its influence in Mangochi, leveraging her historical appeal as a respected former First Lady to mobilize voters.
By encouraging citizens to critically assess candidates, she positions herself as an advocate for accountable governance and civic responsibility, while also serving as a symbolic bridge between the party’s past leadership and its current campaign strategy.
As the election approaches, such appeals may resonate with undecided voters and could shape the political discourse, emphasizing substance over symbolism, and reinforcing DPP’s goal of both energizing its core supporters and winning over new constituencies.
The comparison with other political figures in the region also highlights that Mangochi is now a focal point for competitive politics, where historical influence, community ties, and visible engagement can determine electoral outcomes.
The Malawi Congress Party (MCP) has once again been accused of sowing seeds of disunity in the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) by spreading falsehoods.
This time, the MCP has allegedly fabricated a story that Gertrude Mutharika, the former First Lady, has angered the DPP National Executive for proposing Norman Chisale, a personal bodyguard, to succeed President Peter Mutharika as the party’s president.
According to sources within the DPP, this is nothing but a malicious lie aimed at creating confusion and disunity within the party.
“This is a clear case of MCP’s desperation to destabilize the DPP,” said a senior DPP official, who wished to remain anonymous.
He added, “They have been trying to create divisions within our party for a long time, but their efforts have been in vain.”
The MCP’s tactics are not new. They have been using similar strategies to sow discord among other opposition parties in the past.
However, their latest attempt to drag Gertrude Mutharika’s name into the fray has been met with widespread condemnation from DPP supporters and officials.
“Gertrude Mutharika is a respected member of our party, and we will not allow the MCP to use her name to create confusion,” said another DPP official adding that, “We urge our supporters to remain calm and focused, and not to fall for the MCP’s cheap tricks.”
The MCP’s actions are a clear indication of their desperation to cling to power.
With the DPP gaining momentum ahead of the next general elections, the MCP is becoming increasingly isolated and desperate.
Their tactics may have worked in the past, but they will not succeed this time around.
As the DPP continues to consolidate its support base, the MCP is becoming increasingly irrelevant.
Their attempts to create divisions within the DPP will only serve to further weaken their own party.
In the end, it is the people of Malawi who will suffer from the MCP’s desperate attempts to cling to power.
The country needs a united and focused opposition to hold the ruling party accountable, not a divided and confused one.
As the saying goes, “you reap what you sow”.¹ The MCP’s seeds of discord will ultimately lead to their own downfall.
The DPP, on the other hand, will continue to grow stronger and more united, ready to take on the challenges of leading this great nation.
The MCP’s latest attempt to create confusion within the DPP has failed miserably.
The party’s supporters and officials have seen through their desperate tactics, and they will not be swayed.
As the country moves forward, it is clear that the DPP is the party of the future, while the MCP is increasingly becoming a relic of the past.

In a decisive move to quell rumors that have been circulating on various social media platforms, President Arthur Peter Mutharika, the leader of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), has publicly refuted claims of irreconcilable differences between him and his wife, Her Excellency Gertrude Mutharika.
The allegations, which have gained traction in recent days, were described as false and misleading in a press release issued by Shadrick Namalomba, the party’s spokesperson.
The timing of these rumors is particularly notable, as they emerge just few months before the highly anticipated elections scheduled for September, 2025.
The DPP, under Mutharika’s leadership, is positioning itself as a formidable contender in the electoral race, aiming to reclaim power amid a backdrop of economic challenges that have been attributed to the current administration led by the Malawi Congress Party (MCP).
In the press release, Mutharika emphasized the importance of unity and resilience within his family and the party, stating that such baseless rumors are designed to distract the public from the pressing economic issues facing the nation. “These reports are not only unfounded but are also a deliberate attempt to divert attention from the real challenges that our people are facing,” Mutharika asserted. “As a family, we stand together, and as a party, we are focused on delivering solutions to the economic hardships that have been exacerbated by the current government.”
The DPP has been vocal in its criticism of the MCP’s handling of the economy, which has seen rising inflation, increased unemployment rates, and a general decline in living standards for many Malawians. Mutharika’s administration, which governed from 2014 until 2020, has been portrayed by party officials as a time of relative stability and growth, contrasting sharply with the current economic climate.
The DPP is leveraging this narrative as it campaigns for a return to power, promising to restore economic stability and improve the livelihoods of ordinary citizens.
Mutharika’s press release also highlighted the importance of focusing on substantive issues rather than engaging in gossip and speculation. “As we approach the elections, it is crucial that we engage in meaningful discussions about the future of our country,” he stated. “We must prioritize the needs of our people and work together to find solutions to the challenges we face.”
The allegations of marital discord have not only drawn the ire of Mutharika but have also sparked a broader conversation about the role of social media in shaping public perception.
In an age where information spreads rapidly, the potential for misinformation to influence political discourse is a growing concern.
Mutharika’s response serves as a reminder of the need for responsible communication and the importance of verifying information before sharing it.
Political analysts have noted that the DPP’s strategy in addressing these rumors is indicative of a larger trend in Malawian politics, where personal attacks and character assassination have become common tactics employed by rival parties.
As the election date approaches, it is expected that both the DPP and MCP will intensify their campaigns, with each party seeking to sway public opinion in their favor.
In the wake of the press release, supporters of the DPP have rallied around Mutharika, expressing their solidarity and commitment to the party’s vision for Malawi.
Social media platforms have been flooded with messages of support, with many party loyalists condemning the rumors as an attempt to undermine the DPP’s electoral prospects. “We believe in our leader and his vision for a better Malawi,” one supporter comme…
….As Peter Mutharika seeking divorce from Gertrude….
MANGOCHI-(MaraviPost)-Former President Arthur Peter Mutharika (APM) is said o be fIling for divorce from wife, Gertrude for what insiders say are irreconcilable differences around the TPIN scandal also known as Cementgate.
Filed under the Midima Magistrate Court registry as Civil Case #328 of 2024, Professor Mutharika is seeking to curtail the matrimonial arrangement he has with Gertrude and further get protection in terms of access to his estate which is valued at around MK9.8 billion.
“Professor and wife have been having problems for months now because the cementgate issue is now taking toil on the old man. He has been seeking answers from the wife on how people like Mukhito and Chisale got access to his revenue credentials,” says one of the family’s close friends who requested anonymity for fear of internal reprisal.
Cementgate refers to a criminal misconduct in which Mutharika’s close aides used his Tax Identity Pin (TPIN) to facilitate importation of over 400,000 bags of cement duty free. It was a scheme carried out with some high profile Malawian businessmen of Indian origin who gave huge kickbacks for the freebie import deal.
Mutharika is said to be worried about the TPIN issue because it is becoming a stumbling block to his bid towards a return to the State House.
“He has learnt that the Office of Director of Public Prosecution wants to ammend the charge sheet in a manner that it incriminates the former President more than before thereby derailing his Presidential bid.
Gertrude on the other hand hasn’t taken the divorce lying down. She is said to be consulting her lawyers while also involving marriage counselors from Church of St Louis Montfort in Balaka.
“She has sensed danger in all this and she is being both prepared and vulnerable. Either the lawyers or the church leaders can help her restore the troubled marriage.”
Efforts to get facts on matter from Mutharika proved futile on several attempts as we went to press.
ZOMBA-(MaraviPost)-In a surprising turn of events, Gertrude Mutharika made an unannounced appearance at a political meeting hosted by senior members of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) at the Chinamwali grounds in Zomba.
The sudden arrival of the former First Lady was met with excitement and enthusiasm, catching many party officials off guard.
The gathering, which aimed to strategize and discuss the party’s plans and objectives, took a lively turn when Mutharika entered the venue.
Many DPP leaders, including Mary Navicha, expressed their delight at her unexpected presence, highlighting the warmth and support she brings to the party.
“Madam Mutharika has shown us great love and solidarity today. Her presence reaffirms our collective commitment to the DPP and our shared goals,” Navicha stated.
Mutharika’s appearance at the meeting served as a reminder of her ongoing influence within the party, particularly as the DPP navigates the political landscape in Malawi.
Her longstanding dedication to the party and the people of Malawi has made her a respected figure among party members, and her participation at such events reinforces the importance of unity and collaboration within the DPP.
As the meeting progressed, Mutharika took the opportunity to engage with party leaders, offering words of encouragement and support.
She emphasized the need for the DPP to remain focused on its mission and to continue working diligently for the betterment of the Malawian people.
“Together, we can strengthen our party and make meaningful contributions to our communities,” she urged.
The unexpected nature of her visit not only energized the meeting but also highlighted the importance of grassroots involvement in the DPP’s activities.
Party members left the gathering feeling inspired and motivated, with Mutharika’s presence serving as a catalyst for renewed determination to pursue the party’s objectives.
Gertrude Mutharika’s surprise appearance at the DPP meeting in Zomba has reignited enthusiasm within the party, reinforcing the significance of unity and collaboration as they prepare for upcoming challenges.
Her continued support and engagement demonstrate the enduring legacy of leadership and commitment to the DPP and the people of Malawi.
BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-The Lilongwe city council on Thursday, May 13, 2021 demolished a statue that was build by former First Lady Gertrude Mutharika’s Beautify Malawi (BEAM) Trust at Parliament building in Lilongwe.
The city mayor Juliana Kaduya told Maravi Post that BEAM did not consult the city council when they where constructing the statue.
Kaduya said as the council they have resolved to demolish the structure since they can not give answers to the residents when they ask to explain as what the structure meant
She further revealed that the council has given constructs to various people to manage roundabouts in the city and the place has been given to someone who has different plans.
“We are removing this structure because we don’t know the meaning of the it, we were even failing to explain to residents and tourist what it was all about, so after the outcry of people we have resolved in demolishing it”, she said
The structure was constructed by BEAM trust in 2016/2017 with the aim of beautifying Malawi.
MANGOCHI-(MaraviPost)-As dust refuses to settle in the opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), the party’s leader Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika (APM) has summoned all regional, district, governors and all youths directors to his Villa House in Mangochi to cox them into endorsing Dalitso Kabambe as the party’s leader.
Both Mutharika and Kabambe are from Thyolo district.
Sources within the Central Executive Committee say the development follows research findings that are suggesting that two contenders, Joseph Mwanamvekha and Kondwani Nankhumwa are away ahead of APM’s anointed heir, Kabambe.
Kabambe a the former Reserve Bank Governor who gave himself an outrageous MK27 million per month salary was axed by President Lazarus Chakwera after change of leadership at Capital Hill.
Sources indicate that APM has noticed that Mwanamvekha and Nankhumwa are ahead of his anointed son, Kabambe amongst all voters in the party from constituency to regional and parliamentary levels.
“Bwana as we stand now, Mwanamvekha and Nankhumwa can not lose the election at the convention to Kabambe. These two gentlemen are so much loved in the party at any level, you can imagine,” said a source.
APM is said to have been briefed by one of the central executive members who was part of the research team.
Kabambe has been tasked to pair his candidature with former First lady Gertrude Mutharika as his running mate during the 2025 tripartite polls targeting Eastern Region votes, a move many feel is a ploy to prolong the Mutharika dynasty.
Recently Joseph Mwanamveka has been on the campaign trail all over Malawi to woo support for his candidature at the DPP convention which is to be done in 2023 according to DPP constitution. and
According to the research DPP central executive made, Leader of the Opposition in Parliament, Kondwani Nankhumwa who is also DPP Vice President is leading in the polls with a comfortable percentage.
Nankhumwa is leading by 55%, DPP spokesman on Finance in Parliament, Joseph Mwanamveka coming second at 30%, Bright Msaka who is DPP Vice President for the East comes third with 10% while Dr Daliso Kabambe comes last with 5%.
The above numbers have made Professor Mutharika and his inner circle to summon governors to threaten them so that they endorse Kabambe now though he is not popular.
Many Malawians have expressed concern over Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika type of leadership where he is being bulldozed to make unpopular decisions against the will of the people.
On Sunday, February 21, 2021, The Maravi Post carried an article that Kabambe had settled for former First Lady Gertrude Mutharika as her running-mate ahead of party convention and 2025 general elections.
