Malawian man arrested for raping three women in a row

BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)—Rape is increasingly becoming the order of the day in Malawi as Police in Dowa have arrested a 34-year-old man, Stephano Kaboko Chipiku for allegedly raping three women, one after another, aged 17, 24 and 32.

Dowa Police Spokesperson Sub-inspector Gladson M’bumpha has told local media today Tuesday that “the three went to fetch wild fruits (Masuku), in Kongwe Forest Reserve and whilst there they met Chipiku who was armed with a machete.”

The man then raped the women one after another.

The victims are currently being treated at Dowa District Hospital.

The suspect comes from Kambome Village in the area of Traditional Authority Msakambewa in Dowa.

The incident comes few days after an old man in Mzuzu raped a 10-year-old girl.

Minister of Gender, Community Development and Social Welfare, Patricia Kaliati, expressed worry over the increase in rape cases when she visited the young girl who is hospitalized in Mzuzu.

“It is so heartbreaking that these cases are on the rise. I visited Mzuzu regional police where I have been briefed on how they together with the court’s are doing mobile court sessions in the villages to try and make people understand how serious rape crimes are. I would like to congratulate them for such a good initiative, and urge them to continue doing such a commendable job,” she said.

Malawi is experiencing a wave of rape cases and recently a man was caught bonking a chicken.

Malawi’s Dowa girl dies while aborting pregnancy

DOWA-(MaraviPost)-A 17-year-old girl in Dowa has died after allegedly taking fumigation tablets to abort a five months pregnancy.

The deceased has been identified as Tiyanjane Banda from Besela Village in the area of Traditional Authority Msakambewa in Dowa District.

Gladson M’bumpha, Dowa Police Public Relations Officer (PRO) told The Maravi Post that the incident happened on Friday night. October 9, 2020 between Besela Village and Dowa District Hospital.

M’bumpha however disclosed that police arrested the deceased boyfriend, Bester Edson Banda, aged 25, on a murder charge.

“It is alleged that on this fateful day, the deceased in consultation with her boyfriend, who is a taxi driver, was given six fumigation tablets by the suspect (Banda) so that she should have unsafe abortion.

“The girl drunk two tablets around evening hours and started feeling unwell and was taken to Dzaleka Health Centre for examination and treatment,” he said.

M’bumpha added, “Later the girl was referred to Dowa District Hospital and before her death, she revealed that she was given the fumigation pills by her boyfriend.

“The girl died while receiving treatment at Dowa District Hospital.Postmortem conducted at Dowa District Hospital revealed that death was due to acute poisoning”.

Meanwhile, police have recovered the remaining tablets from the deceased house.

NTCHISI (Maravi Post)—Police in Ntchisi have arrested five people for allegedly committing the offence of theft by trick. Ntchisi Police spokesperson Gladson M’bumpha told Maravi Post that the theft by trick offence was committed happened between June 15 to June 18 2016 in the area of Traditional Authority Kalumo in the district.

It is alleged that the trickers Chikafa Bisalomu, 41, of Chimbayo Village, Traditional Authority Kabudula and Chisoni Mdyetseni, 44, of Nambuma Village, Traditional Authority Mtema, all from Lilongwe and three women formed a fake association called Tilime 3 and Women Association.

On June 7 2016 the suspects visited Traditional Authority Kalumo telling him that their association provides loans to small scale farmers and they provide rice seed in 500 grams at a fee of K1000.

People were organized and sensitized and on June 15 2016, the suspects brought the rice seed and distributed the seed as well as collected money more than K700 000 from members.
A well-wisher tipped police and the matter was followed on June 18 2016 and the suspects were arrested.

M’bumpha said “the matter is under enquiry.”

Man who went fishing drowns in Malawi’s Bua river

NTCHISI (MaraviPost)— A 31-year-old man in Ntchisi has died after drowning in Bua River where he had gone to fish. The incident occurred on Sunday June 5 2016.

According to Ntchisi Police Spokesperson Gladson M’bumpha, the deceased has been identified as Samson Yona of Khasu Village in the area of Traditional Authority Chilooko in the district.

Police report indicate that the deceased who was an epileptic patient went fishing together with his young brother Gaison Yona, 14, who at 3pm left him (deceased) fishing.

The deceased did not return home till night which made his father Yona Ziyenda and community to search him on to find him on Monday dead in deep waters.

The deceased is strongly suspected to have been attacked by epileptic disease when he was fishing which forced him to fall into the river. A postmortem conducted at Malomo Health Centre indicated that Yona died of suffocation as a result of drowning.

M’bumpha said that no foul play was suspected as the body had no marks of violence.

Judicial punch of 10 years in prison landed to Ntchisi defilement convict in Malawi

NTCHISI (MaraviPost)—The Ntchisi First Grade Magistrate’s Court has sentenced a 34-year-old man to 10 years imprisonment with hard labour for defiling an eleven year old girl.

Ntchisi Police spokesperson Gladson M’bumpha told Maravi Post that, the convict, Cosmas Mphonde, defiled the girl on April 15 2016 at Chimbunde Village in the area of Traditional Authority Malenga in

the district.
“The court learnt that on the day, the girl was at her friend’s house

playing and in course of playing her friend was called by her mother to wash plates and the girl thought of going home but on her way, she was caught and pushed in a maize garden where the convict defiled her,” narrated M’bumpha.

Medical examination at Ntchisi District proved that the victim’s private parts was indeed tampered with.

In her ruling, First Grade Magistrate Dorothy Kalua sentenced Mphonde to 10 years with hard labour to deter would-be offenders.

Meanwhile, M’bumpha also disclosed that the court has also sentenced a 30-year-old Piason Nthimbo to eight years imprisonment with hard labour for committing the offence of burglary and theft.

The  material facts of the case on which the accused was convicted was  that the accused on March 4 2016 broke into a house of Magret Makawa at Kachulu location in the district where he stole items valued  at K200 000.
