NTCHISI (Maravi Post)—Police in Malawi’s central district of Ntchisi have arrested a 33-year-old woman for allegedly committing an offence of infanticide. The incident happened on September 24 2016 at Munkhokha Village in Ntchisi.

According to Ntchisi Police Spokesperson Gladson M’bumpha, the suspect has been identified as Janipher Patson of Mutachira Village in the area of Traditional Authority Chilooko in Ntchisi. Police report indicate that the suspect gave birth to a newly born baby and killed it.

It is alleged that the suspect was nine month pregnant and on September 19 2016 at about 7pm gave birth alone at home and decided to kill the newly born baby and dumped it in a pit latrine.

People surrounding the village were surprised to see the suspect without a baby or to hear any news of the death of the newly born. But at first when the suspect was asked about her pregnancy, she denied that she was pregnant.

This prompted group village headman Munkhokha to tip the police about the matter on September 23 2016.

When police received the information, they made a follow up and the suspect was interviewed where she admitted that she gave birth and killed the newly born baby and dumped it in a pit latrine.

Police visited the scene of crime and the newly born baby was removed from the pit latrine while in a decomposed state which was wrapped in a plastic bag.

The clinical officer who examined the body revealed that the neck of the baby was twisted causing suffocation. The suspect will appear in court soon to answer a charge of infanticide.
